Norton Antivirus 2008 (3 user) £4.93 @ The Hut

£4.93

-226°

FOUND BY: muffinman 3 months, 1 week ago

Please don't take my posting of this deal as any indication that I endorse the use of Norton in any way whatsoever. I will point out now (hopefully to stop a tirade along these lines) that Norton WILL hog resources on your PC, it ISN'T particularly good, and there ARE better free recommended alternatives e.g. Avast, Avira, AVG...if you're interested in those instead, which you should be, Google is your friend.

However, in the spirit of the site, I am posting this deal as I think it is a very good price for those who do choose to use Norton and may be looking for a cheap renewal.

Oh, and if you do buy it, the cashback rate is better at TCB (5%) than Quidco.

OP - fair play, you have made the point about it being cheapest etc - so my following comments are about the deal, not your fair way of bringing it to us.

However - a fiver on this is like p**sing it down the drain. This product is so useless that it is in fact dangerous IMO to sell it, as it gives people the only thing worse than NO AV - a false sense of security that they DO have AV.

Get three freebies of Avira instead.

Harlzter - saying its hot because its not cheaper elsewhere is like saying that the cheapest Ford Fiesta you can get is £30 grand compared to £50 grand normally, despite that fact you can get an Audi A3 for £20 grand, so therefore such a deal is hot.

Sorry - but it aint!

Norton and McAfee are a waste of time at home, if you use them at work then fair enough McAfee EPO is fine for lazy network admins but at home? Why would you when there's a dozen free alternatives that are actually better and drain less resources on your PC? Paid for AV for home is also available that's miles better than either of them.

The only reason anyone would have for buying it was if it was a proud mum who's son was on the box..

P.S. she'd probably be so embarrased she'd cut out the Norton part.

This is the best AV by far... http://www.eset.co.uk/Compare/Competition
Works differently to most of the others (heuristics rather than signatures) so more likely to pick up nasties during an on-demand scan.

Scrimper - disagree, on two fronts.

Most AV have been using Heuristics for years, and certainly it isnt the only free one to use it.

Secondly, by far the highest rated freebies (by detection percentage, which ultimately is what its all about) are Avira, AVG and Avast - in that order.

Eset isn't free
Yes, many other AVs use heuristics WHEN you perform a deep scan. However when you initially download a file, they only perform an initial scan based on signature detection.... so the virus can go undetected until the next scheduled deep scan is performed.

My apologies - thought you put free. This makes ESET even worse, as clearly is trumped majorly by Kaspersky.

ESETs detection rate leaves something to be desired - I dont care how it detects the virus, as long as it does. The detection rate of ESET comes out BELOW Norton in many tests.

In addition, its also generally thought to be a resource hungry monster.

BTW - Avira (FREE) uses Heuristics during real time protection (which is what you are referring to).

Funny how symantec (Norton) would appear to be the second best in those graphs
