You probably know what this chip is about if you're reading this. Those of you that don't, click the Go To Deal button to the right of this, and that'll tell you all the details you need. For my part, at £130 delivered, this is cheapest Q6700 that I can find anywhere right now, and it's some £16 lower than the next-nearest offer, which is from OcUK. Obviously, this is going to get voted cold within a heartbeat, and perhaps rightly so when you consider that the new line of Q8 and Q9 chips is either slightly less or slightly more expensive for newer and, in some cases, faster tech. Try getting them to 3.4GHz, though.

The Q9550 is £161 at Scan on Today Only and that’s a retail version with a heatsink and 3 year warranty. If you have a mobo that supports both I’d recommend the Q9550 as it’s faster and runs significantly cooler so is also a good over-clocker. Scan also have the Q9400 2.67GHz for £133 which is also a retail CPU.
If you don’t have a mobo then wait for the new Intel platform released in early September unless you have a good deal on an LGA775 mobo.  |

Because Scan have the Q9400 2.67GHz for £133 which is also a retail CPU. I think it's only worth considering if you have an older mobo which doesn't support these newer 45nm CPUs that we're all pimping as alternatives. |

My post was very unclear, what I intended to imply was that I would only recommend the Q6x00 series for people with older mobos, not the Q8400. Thanks for clarifying my post which might easily have misled.

By the way, I've just put an order down for that E6300 and Gigabyte mobo you told me to buy last Sunday, all with Scan. Worked out about £20 dearer than the Phenom X3 combo, but £12 cheaper than it would've been at Scan, so it seemed like a pretty ace deal all in all. Cheers, dude
I cool it with a copper core Intel stock cooler and a £1 Panaflo fan that Scan sell. With the motherboard reducing the fan speed to 50% it is truly silent once in the case. I didn’t use the heatsink/fan that came with it as I already had the copper core version that ships with the Quad cores. I’d highly recommend the Panaflo fans but I had to use elastic bands and blu-tack to hold it in place. All very Blue Peter.  |
