Just checked on the Lacie site and the actual throughput is 8mbs which is poop, the 500gb has 11mbps thoughput which is still pretty terrible. In short if you're using it just for a backup then go for it, if you wanna stream media from it you might wanna look at something a bit beefier.

Thanks for that - any tips on what would be good for streaming HD media - I'm in the process of building a media system and storage hasn't been decided yet but I was thinking of a NAS with 2x1tb disks in with the ability to add more?

ReadyNas Duo would be one of the best options. Blistering fast speeds and i have the Pro version with no problem streaming BluRay rips via my Popcorn Hour. It is however expensive compared to the cheap Lacie but if you buy stuff like that for streaming media it's a false economy.

Actually its 8 MBps(mega bytes per second) not megabits as you imply. It isn't too slow if it is sustained data tansfer rate.

Nice looking drive....

I recently purchased a 500Gb version from Asda, then sold on ebay 1 week later.

Review:
Its not a very good drive, very, very slow x-fer rates: 8-11Mbit/s average. Struggled to steam xvid to my pc. Forget .mkv containers.
500Gb would not spin down when not in use. (pain, pain, pain)

Info on hacking drive

Summary,

If your happy to put up with slow transfer rates and no spin down then this is a ok drive.
