Seems a good deal, how does this handle Xbox 360/PS3/Blu Ray as it's not 1080p?

Yes for a new TV, if you do not buy a 1080P then you loose out on the quality very much. so this is the right question to ask!

I've owned Samsungs, the jump between the series is quite significant.
This is a great deal, however the latest Samsung's (Series 7) is such a jump even when comparing a previous series set running 1080p to series 7 1080p

No, I asked how it ran with a 360 etc.

This is because I currently run them from a 1080p TV and just wanted someone to comment on the difference.

I have a similar 50" version to this and once the Plasma has been 'broke in' and calibrated properly, it looks stunning. 360 looks very good on it and i cannot tell the difference between me running my tv at 720p and my mates 6 series running at 1080p.

Dear oh dear, lets try and sort this out eh?

Most Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 games don't run at 1080p - they run at 720p (a few exceptions like Wipeout HD do run at 1080p however). So even if you have a 1080p television, the 720p image sent from the console will have to be upscaled (stretched) by the TV to 1080p. As an 'HD Ready' screen has less upscaling to do, the 720p picture will look as good if not better than on a 1080p screen.

However for 1080p games like Wipeout HD, and Blu-Ray films, a 1080p screen will look better, because the pixels are mapped 1:1, and the panel does not have to scale the image up or down.

So your purchase depends on the content you are most likely to view on the screen - if you play XBox and watch mostly 720p content or lower, HD Ready is perfectly good, and will look slightly better than on a 1080p set. If you watch Blu-Ray or want to experience 1080p gaming from a console or PC, get a 1080p screen.

Simples.

I owned this very tv (ps42a457) last year when it was first released. It is a good budget set but do not expect it to match the quality of sets much higher in the range. SD material is okay but HD just looks very soft and not really HD like. I ended up selling it in the end and went for a 1080p set..... there is a significant difference between the two. If you're not really fussed about HD sharpness and vibrancy it will be okay, however if you have seen some of the newer 1080p sets playing HD material and can afford the extra amount, you will be left wanting with this Series 4.
