HOT: there is the other option of buying a cheaper x2 and higher clocked unlocking cores ... alas I am not sure if this is a practical everyday thing for most peoeple

Yes 2 problems with that. 1) It's pot luck if you get one that will unlock and is stable and 2) Motherboard support for it is getting scarce.

Basically if you are building a system on the cheap or have a suitable AM2+ board for upgrading then it should be hard to beat for the price.

Anyone translate into english for me?

To answer my own question I believe you need a specific type of Gigabyte motherboard which has ACC in the BIOS to unlock certain disabled features of AMD processors, sad thing is those motherboards cost about £40 more than other ones so £ on motherboard or extra £ on processor? Hmmm...

I just found a good guide - with an extensive list of motherboards
http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/53...ing-guide.html
A suitabl mother board is £60 on ebuyer.
I have no experience... just wanted too see what people thought

nb concludion
:
AMD Phenom II X2 and X3 processors have disabled cores which can be unlocked using the right motherboard and BIOS. Ultimately, however, those cores were disabled for a reason. Whether you are able to get those unlocked cores stable is where luck plays a part. Read this guide, pick the right cpu+motherboard combination, and good luck.

This mobo has ACC enabled in the bios.

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Pr...P-AMD-AM3-DDR3

i got my partner one last week with an x3 phenom.

Iuf you cant get it to unlock the features then you need to use to CMOS pins and connect them to clear the settings to default, otherwise you think you have killed the mobo

Why bother buying an X2 and trying to unlock cores when you can get this for £78.
Hot for me :D

That's an AM2+ board though. I'm sure the way to go now for future upgradeability is AM3?!

The one you listed is the phenom II x4 810. The one here is a Athlon II x4 610. Clock speeds are the same but the Athlon lacks the the L3 cache of the phenom. As there is no benchmarks for this as it's so new (Global foundries got this out early to try to steal some of Intels i5), it's hard to compare the two. However if you look at the phenom II x2 vs Athlon II x2 then you would expect about 10-15% difference between the two.

AM2+ are what make the platform great value. AM3 with DDR3 is still expensive and at the moment the performance to cost value over DDR2 is just not there (Amazon Kingston DDR2 deal £26) at the moment.

For most people the AM3 platform has no advantage over the AM2+. Now with the AM2+ getting the 785G chipset and 4200HD onboard GPU that will be upto most graphics requirements bar games.

true... There is hardly any performance gain by using a AM3 board over a AM2+ at the mo, and unlikely to be in the near future too.

And all current AM3 chips (cpus) will work on AM2+ boards.

The TA790GX 128M mobo can be had for £65 and with DDR2 4gb going for 26.. that's one cheap set up!

Most AM2+ boards wont support the Phenom II x4 965BE as its power requirements are too high. But as it not as good value as the 955 anyway its not a problem (Was £140 at Scan yesterday)
