In my experience Lidl best before dates are just a few months away with cheap branded cola, with Costco it's a year away.

Costco is not a solitary manipulator but a shafter - along the lines of Tesco. These types know how to trap those who are always on heat and they employ the Chosen Few methods to the hilt. Using mesmeric low-profit leaders to entice their victims who quickly bare their all, emerging dazed and eagarly waiting for the next round of shafting. The Costco model in the States is once again, dumbed-down over here. Costco is mostly expensive but using the trick of a privileged club, oka "subscribed members", they plunge the knive at every opportunity. Subscribing to buy expensively - you can't get more dumbed-down than that. As for membership, all the big vuns have a card scheme except you know who and they are fairly priced on most items but don't buy their own branded stuff without qualification. Shop only at Costco for their low-profit leaders and to fully exploit their extended-warranty/purchase-satisfaction scheme which is what the membership subscription is actually paying for.
