Venturi Mini - BT hands free and MP3 car kit - 39.99 @ Play RRP 79.99

£39.99

26°

FOUND BY: Nige 2 months, 2 weeks ago

The Venturi Mini does some pretty cool things that other basic kits don't::

-Stream audio from a Bluetooth device to the Venturi Mini, which converts to FM for your radio
-It can also transmit status messages and alerts to your radio's display via RDS (including caller ID)
-Phonebook access/ctrl via the car kit's controls
-Handsfree calling, uses built in mic, and incoming audio is broadcast via FM to your car's stereo (consider the security implications of this before phoning your bank manager, mistress etc.)
-Also has charger connectivity (I think via USB out-of-the box, adapter may be necessary), and wired audio in/out

Negative's I've read, but can't confirm:
- iPhones dont work with it
- Charging is restricted to 500ma 5v(this is pretty reasonable tho and conforms to USB spec)
- The unit connects directly to cigarette lighter, and the close coupling can make fitting it a bit awkward in some cars.

It's not the newest piece of kit around, but it's well worth a punt at 39.99 - typically selling around £50 elsewhere. I've seen mostly favourable reviews.

If you've found it cheaper - please let me know before voting neg. There are cheaper kits out there, but they're generally voice only and don't contain half the features of this.

Thanks, good post. Got my eye on one of these for listening to music on mobile, just not sure there's enough leeway round my car lighter.

If I'm listening to the radio or a cd and a call comes in, what happens? Do I have to quickly tune the radio to whatever frequency this thing kicks out or does it automatically switch sort of like trafic updates?

No - I don't think it will auto-tune. Probably best that way - if you were sitting in traffic and your little receiver sent out an RDS Traffic Announcement, everyone around you would most likely end up listening to your phone call

You just preset the unit to a frequency that seems empty in your area, and store that on your car hifi, so when a call comes in you have to switch to that FM preset station. You can then decide if you want to answer the call or not.

Not seen this kit before, and am not voting, just opening up the discussion.

There are Loads of this type of gadget around for cheaper at Dealextreme (and other companies) with varying connection, varying in how they connect to or play music files, but all with Bluetooth phone connectivity. Here are a few for comparison:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.23559
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.23558
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14617
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12555
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.24912

Main difference to others seems to be the caller ID via RDS function, not seen that before, (although this one seems to do something similar: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15929) and while it sounds useful, I am not sure I would want to lose the RDS TA function, for what it is made for!

While I use Dealextreme for small purchases, I am also not too certain I would want to risk purchases abroad for the pricer some of these sell at, let alone pay duty on them!

I've had one of these since they first came out - they are very very good. I've tried other kits and this is the best plugin type I've had.

They are totally tunable - not just half a dozen fixed presets.

If you drive long distances you will get occasional interference, but if you have tuned into a few clear frequencies you can re-tune instantly. But I can drive from Herts to Leics on the M1 without a problem.

You do get the occassional spurt of noise if someone is in a car using a device set to the same
frequency but it is quite rare.

I use with phone and ipod (with dongle) absolutely fine.

If using phone - hands free works well - but depends on position of lighter socket as the micrphone is fixed.

At this price it is a steel.
