Yes Ubuntu, much better than Vista, doddle to use and an easy transition from any MS operating system.

Ubuntu is a version of linux. A nice operating system. quicker and sleeker than windows with kess problems viruses. The only downside is that it doesnt run windows programs obvously but there are many good alternatives.

Ubuntu runs a great deal of Windows software using WINE and also provides many near identical alternatives for no cost. You only have to look at how MS are trying to discredit Linux with their campaign to sell Windows 7 in the US to realise how they they fear this free alternative will impact on profits. If it was as bad as they suggest would they really feel the need to criticise it ?

When you say it doesn't run windows progs - which progs do you mean?

For instance Photoshop? does it run that (I'm new to pc's).

It runs programs those specifically written for linux (ubuntu).
There are programs which have linux versions too,like skype,firefox,opera,nero etc;but practically every windows software has its linux equivalents. Photoshop alternative is the gimp for instance : http://www.gimp.org/
