The Energy Monitor works using wireless technology to send instant power readings to a wireless display. The sensor clips around the electricity meter live feed where it measures the total electricity entering the home.

They forget to mention that the monitor USES ENERGY!

I got mine free from British Gas and discovered the monitor USES energy to work. Where is the saving in that? I'll go back to my old way and just read my electricity use off the meter.

Thats an amazing discovery you made there.
I recently discovered my tv used electricity to work and not the magic I thought it ran on.

I cannot remember the exact kwh/year the british gas uses but I think its equivalent to you boiling the kettle an extra 3 times in the year. Seriously if you keep an eye on it you tend to deelop a habit of switching off unused appliances. Well worth it I would say. Hot deal by the way.

Ye I had a moment like that myself. I bought a calculator so I could calculate my finances better and save some money but then I realised that calculators actually COST money, where is the saving in that? I think I will just work all my bills out in my head instead.

Umm, there is an adapter that's a standard wall socket to USB type affair. You can run the monitor direct from the USB port of any computer for "free" energy (ok - nothing's free - but you know what I mean.)

Oh, and we're talking less than 100mW/H! Hardly like boiling a kettle an extra 3 times!

I'd just like to thank you for this post. You're one of the best arguments for the pro green lobby I've encountered in a long while.

I've used one of these, it quickly shows what uses the most electricity and how to cut down.
In case you missed it electricity costs money so cutting its use saves money (if only there was a web site dedicated to listing "Hot Deals" that we could save money on, what a great idea). Ask someone what money is sometime, given you don't care what size your electricity bill is I assume that your parents are still paying for it all or something.
Perhaps instead of hanging around posting uneducated and ill informed rants on the internet you should "get out a bit more" yourself?

The Owl version allows you to plug in more than one sensor.

It depends... unlike the plug-in ones, they have a fundamental design flaw in that they can't see the voltage waveform, only the current waveform, so for anything that doesn't have unity power factor they will overestimate, and if your mains voltage isn't stable (and the same as it's calibrated for) then they will give an inaccurate answer as well. I think the plug-in ones are a better bet.

Of course using batteries is using an even more expensive form of energy per watt that it consumes, than the mains it is monitoring.

Hopefully it does not use many batteries and lasts a long time on each set.

On the other hand, it if points out some wasteful appliance (like the Plasma TV) being on standby using almost as much electricity as when it is on, it can offset the small cost in running it by changing habits that save a lot more energy overall.

I only hope the original post about this monitor using energy was in fact taking the urinatory substance, and not being serious.

Otherwise I an going to be very worried about the future of this Earth, and those humans are left, if that was the typical "average" human analysis of the benefits versus drawbacks of using this monitor.

I bought some food today, but found out that it takes energy to chew and digest, so I decided to save the energy I have got, by starving!!!!

Brilliant, let's hope we have started a trend for ridiculous analogies, and see what others can come up with!
