HERE IS WHAT BT SAY...

Speed up your broadband by eliminating interference from your extension wiring

Did you know the telephone extension wiring in your house can pick up all sorts of electrical noise and interference from TV's, lights and other everyday electrical equipment? This interference can affect your broadband signal resulting in a slower broadband speed.
Try our quick and affordable solution

Help is at hand! BT has developed the I-Plate, a unique filter that helps stop any interference affecting the broadband signal. As long as you have a suitable BT Master socket, (see below) and extension wiring (see below) the I-Plate can help. It's quick and easy to fit with a screwdriver and you don't need to disconnect any wires.
How much could my speed improve by?

In previous tests the I-Plate has been shown to boost line speeds - typically by 1.5Mbps. The actual change will vary from house to house. Although speed improvements are likely, they can't be guaranteed. The improvements in speed will take up to 2 weeks to come through so that line stability is not affected. Even if it doesn't improve the speed the I-Plate can help stabilise your broadband line making it more reliable.
BT I-Plate - Will it work for you?
1. Do you have extension wiring?

Extension wiring is the telephone wiring, usually a small white cable, which often runs along your skirting boards or outside your house. It connects the main socket to any extension sockets you have. It doesn't matter if you use the sockets or not, as long as the wiring is there the I-Plate may help.
2. Do you have a master telephone socket with a horizontal line across the front? The I-Plate is NOT suitable if:

* your socket has a horizontal line, but also an Openreach logo on it - this socket has an I-Plate filter built in.
* your socket doesn't have a horizontal line across the front
* your socket has two connection points - for telephone and DSL

For pictures of these sockets, click on the link at the top of this page "Will the I-Plate work with your phone socket?"

LINK TO SHOW SOCKETS IT WORKS WITH

This has been listed before - but at £6.63 - and it got pretty good reviews - but the deal shows a dead link now.

This post also shows its available for £1.20 if you are a BT Broadband customer, which was never mentioned before.

Good deal for existing customers and this will definetely increase your connection speed.

However you would be better off purchasing an XTE-2005 Master Faceplate from adslnation. The reason for this is because it also acts as a master faceplate which acts as a master filter, eliminating the need for several seperate micro-filters.

You can purchase it from here -

http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/ca...roducts_id=105 at £10.99 + £1.50 p&p.

You should also purchase an IDC tool for installation which again is available here -

http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/ca...products_id=93 at £0.59.

The installation is very straight forward and instructions are provided.

Why don't you just disconnect the ring wire (3) from the inside of the socket and save yourself any outlay?

Post it as a deal on its own - as its likely to get more coverage than just mentioned in a thread.

That deal showed the price for non BT punters as....

:
Normally £11.73!
So this was combining both, and the last deal showing a discount for non BT was....

BT I-plate - £6.63 Free Delivery @ BT Shop

Which as you can see has disappeared.

So this shows the updated price and the discount for BT users.

Speaking as someone who recently escaped from BT to O2 I really like the "victims of BT Broadband" comment

It seems the speed takes a couple of weeks to happen - as the line clarity needs to been seen for a while by the exchange before they start increasing the rate.

In saying that I bought one while in the shop - thinking it matched my socket (from memory) - I was a plonker - it didn't match.

So I gave it to my brother and he found an improvement almost immediately.

So what does this do then? I've also looked on the BT site and the faceplate will only work on certain types of installation.

Speaking as someone who is stuck with BT until O2, Sky, etc start unbundling a few more exchanges I have to agree with the "victim" quote too. I've got a huge Sky call centre at the end of my street but the can't offer me a cheap deal as it's not available in my area. They can of course offer me an expensive deal.

What this does is to basically allow you to plug the broadband filter straight into the master test socket while having a faceplate on. (The test socket is clean from any extensions etc) so you can achieve the same by simply doing that.
Whether or not you get a speed increase will depend on if you get any noise from the internal wiring.

The best time to resynch a router is between 9am and 3pm while the network is quieter, which normally allows a better speed than after 6pm. if you have a higher SNR then next time you reboot you should get a higher speed if your ISP works to a target SNR (normally 6db or more)

On O2 in the day I can synch at 7.5Mb, but at night I may get 6.8 or 7Mb, depending on the quality of the line I can sometimes hold 7.5Mb but it may cause a resynch anyway so largely I reboot in the evening for stability.
