Why Evolution is True by Jerry. A. Coyne - £9.74 @ Amazon

Review
Scientists don't use the word 'true' lightly, but in this lively and engrossing book, Jerry Coyne shows why biologists are happy to use it when it comes to evolution. Evolution is 'true' not because the experts say it is, nor because some world view demands it, but because the evidence overwhelmingly supports it. There are many superb books on evolution, but this one is superb in a new way -- it explains the latest evidence for evolution lucidly, thoroughly, and with devastating effectiveness. -- Steven Pinker

Review
'Why Evolution Is True' suceeds in being fully accessible to any reader who has even a vague idea of what DNA is.' (Douglas J. Futuyma, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Vol.24, No. 7 )

It is a book that needed to be written and needs to be read. (Douglas J. Futuyma, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Vol. 24, No. 7 )

One of the very best and most important book on evolution for broad audiences in at least 50 years. (Douglas J. Futuyma, Trends in Ecology and Evolution )

A scholarly, yet delightfully readable account. (Tom Tregenza, Current Biology, Volume 19 )

We must present the evidence, and Jerry Coyne's book does an excellent job of it. (Massimo Pigliucci, Science )

Evolution is true...Coyne displays it for us in a way that no objective reader could fail to find compelling. (Richard Dawkins, TLS )

'Why Evolution is True'is outstandingly good. (Richard Dawkins, TLS )

Coyne's knowledge of evolutionary biology is prodigious, his deployment of it as masterful as his touch is light. (Richard Dawkins, TLS )

His coverage is enviably comprehensive, yet he simultaneously manages to keep the book compact and readable. (Richard Dawkins, TLS )

Coyne's book is just what we needed in this bicentennial year to anchor Darwin where he belongs. (Nigel Hawkes, The Times )

Selected as onf of the 'Fifity Books for our Time'. (Newsweek )

A clear, engaging, accessible explanation of the evidence for evolution. (Massimo Pigliucci, Science )

Excellent volume. (Clive Cookson, Financial Times )

Lucid, thorough and eminently readable, this book is a delight from start to finish. (Doug Johnstone, Scotsman.com )

Coyne gives a clear and engaging overview of what evolution is, and how it works. (BBC Focus )

Coyne is as graceful a stylist and as clear a scientific explainer as Darwin himself (no mean feat). It's one of the best single-volume introductions to evolutionary theory ever. (Wired magazine )

A masterfully concise reinstating of [Darwin's] big idea. (Karen Shook, THE )

There are many superb books on evolution, but this one is superb in a new way -- it explains the latest evidence for evolution lucidly, thoroughly, and with devastating effectiveness. (Steven Pinker )

For anyone who wishes a clear, well-written explanation of evolution by one of the foremost scientists working on the subject, 'Why Evolution is True' should be your choice. (E. O. Wilson )

I once wrote that anybody who didn't believe in evolution must be stupid, insane or ignorant, and I was then careful to add that ignorance is no crime. I should now update my statement: aybody who doesn't believe in evolution is stupid, insane, or hasn't read Jerry Coyne. (Richard Dawkins )

An engaging and accessible account of one of the most important ideas ever conceived by mankind. The book is a stunning achievement, written by one of the world's leading evolutionary biologists. Coyne has produced a classic. (Neil Shubin, author of 'Your Inner Fish' )

Thanks. Looking forward to reading this. I'm not an evolutionist, but I try to keep up with what is being written. Hopefully Coyne is brighter than Dawkins (Richard Dawkins says some truly dumb things )

Evolution is demonstrably not true. The evidence does not support it. Evolution does not supply any more answers than creationism and neither stand up to scientific rigour. This is nothing but superficial science and exploitation of a gullible market.

So it rather begs the question is this book worth reading and is it worth £9.74? Probably not.

Cold also for being endorsed by the clueless Richard Dawkins.

Well worth a read, very interesting if your mind is open enough to critically assess the evidence. I think Coyne writes well, you should also check out Prothero's excellent book on Fossil-based evidence for evolution if this kind of thing floats your boat.

Demonstrably not true, huh? Please demonstrate.

spionkop makes some rather interesting (and notably unsupported) views. "Evolution is demonstrably not true" - so there is no recorded change in one animal form to another; how do you explain evolution by artificial (i.e. human imposed) selection? Were all the different breeds of dog miraculously created at the time of "creation"?

If you're talking about natural selection as a mechanism then why not refer to it specifically, otherwise you just appear ignorant.

Raises the question, not begs the question. And sadly, that's the least of the things wrong with your post.

How far do you wish to take your logic/argument?

If you wish to be pedantic in relation to others semantics at least ensure your post is bullet proof.
Many would take you to task for beginning a sentence with a conjunction!

Anyway, it wasn't God, it wasn't chance mutations, it was aliens. Thought everyone knew that.

Maybe the problem is with the reader, or perhaps Dawkins struggles to write the correct thing when the world is full of so many brainwashed loons out there believing what they believe without question.

I have read most of the evolution theory authors (including Charles Darwin's works), but Dawkins seems to be the least convincing. It is almost like he's on the back foot with his back against the wall trying to defend his version of evolution. I have not read Coyne, but hope he is a better author / speaker than Dawkins.
