sorry for being thick, but what does the ethernet cable bring to the party?

EDIT - I know what it does, just seems a strange combination. Good price so heat added

I thought you could add USB storage to it and put it on the network, alas I realised it just a retractable CAT5 cable to plug your laptop into a hub etc...

So the cat 5 does what?

Still don't get it, lol.

is that cat5 cable the same as I use from my router to my PC? If so then what is one doing on a USB hub? Why? It looks like it has two connectors so would I stick one end in my router and the other in my PC to get the internet?

And then the 4 usb ports would be used as a usb extension for the PC that is connected?

use the ethernet cable for hotels, travel places, airports etc etc instead of carying arround a normal cable with you (if you have no wifi)

The "cat5" part is simply a coiled up cable... its NOTHING to do with the hub !
They can be split apart and used separately.... not sure how they came up with this pairing !

is right. they are not stuck together although they look like that in the picture

they pairing make very good for traveling. I wish I had one of these a while ago at a hotel I was staying at.

Yes, the ethernet cable is an extremely occasional thing. There aren't many people who will need both the hub and the retractable ethernet cable at the same time.

Check out some of the other hubs on 7dayshop - for most people it'll be a better buy getting a powered hub for the same price.

why the ethernet cable? because this is designed for laptop users when travelling. you connect it to a usb port and an ethernet port. the other end of the ethernet cable will plug in to a router or switch

interestingly when you look at the pictures i think you can see a power plug port, meaning you could possibly buy a power adapter and make this in to a powered hub. documentation doesnt seem to mention this thought.
