CrazyBob:
Personally, If I was hit by a big surge, I would prefer a surge strip to stop working in order to protect my expensive computer or HiFi.
So would I. But you are making the basic assumption that this will actually happen. It's just as likely that you are being duped by the marketing into buying something which will offer no practical protection at all. It's not like saying "this tin contains 500g of baked beans" - there is no specification to prove what it actually does. You could argue that ANY extension lead offers surge protection because the air gap between the live and other connections inside it will break down and arc across if there is enough voltage. There's no more to this than the outrageous claims made by suppliers of overpriced HDMI leads.
:
And yes it has happened to me.
What has - a "surge"? Tell me what happened.
steven gerrard:
its not just lightening (sic) though...
Of course it isn't. But show me the specification provided for this extension lead that proves that it will do anything useful at all, in any circumstances.

these are good if like me you have about 20 electrical items in your bedroom.......i have the need for 20 plugs, and if i used normal extension leads there is a bigger risk of somethign goign wrong....
How exactly?
