Are there any disadvantages of buying an automatic over a manual car???

POSTED BY: chocolateabuse 2 months, 5 days ago

Hello everybody, I need urgent help please as I've got to decide whether or not to buy an automatic diesel audi a3 by the end of today!!
It's a 2000 model and at a very good price, but the only downside is that it's an automatic car...Well I don't know if that technically is a downside, so I need your advice to say whether it is or isn't.
Are there any disadvantages of buying an automatic or do you think I should go for it?
I will give enormous rep and virtual hugs to everyone who replies.
Thank-you in advance xx :-)

I have had automatics for 20+ years now and I have only good things to report. They have all been totally reliable - Vauxhall, Toyota, Nissan - and I have never really seen the point of 'manuals'.
I have no idea whether it being a diesel makes any odds; ours have all been petrol.

if its a good value go for it, and audi should be relaible either way

a manual might be more economical, but as it is a diesel, it should be fine

I would stay away from automatic french cars though, the gearbox is usually rubbish on them

Can't think of any downside, I have loved all my auto's.

Fuel economy drops but only a small amount.

There will be people along shortly to tell you the following, both rubbish.
a) there not a real drivers car
b) they are expensive to fix when they go wrong

Having had automatics before I'd say the only real drawbacks of them is they're a lot less economical (upto 10mpg at times) and they're harder to sell so depreciate more than the equivalent manual.

I couldn't tell you if there are any technical advantages/disadvantages, but does anyone else have to drive it too? For example, I like automatics - driven them in the States and had a couple of my own cars in the UK. However, my girlfriend hates them (unexplained reason), so whenever I buy a different car it tends to be a manual.

If it was purely my choice, I wouldn't let an auto box put me off from buying a car.

Automatic Audi gearboxes are awesome. Is it a standard auto, or a 'tiptronic' style box? My Dad has one, it's a dream to drive. As most Audis are.

Get it.

I have a shogun, alot are auto but mines apparently unusual as its manual. I tried an automatic when ours got bumped and wasn't keen but i guess its all about getting used to it.
My brother also has a shogun which is auto which he loves, just strange at first, his does use more diesel than ours though.
I want to swap for an audi :0

Only downfall really is there probably abit slower. But doubt you'd be raggin it anyway. It used to be that auto's werent as effiecient as manuals but thats different now.
