nvidia cards come with more bells and whistles on, such as CUDA and PhysX which is used in some games. for arguements sake they do perform roughly the same. the 260 uses a bit less power than the 4870. most of the time with these cards it ends up coming down to personal preference, but considering the difference of £20 i would get the 4870

Edit: that may be true but considering the price difference your not going to get £20 worth of performance increase by choosing the Nvidia card

It usually comes down to the amount you're willing to spend...

This benchmark for Crysis (very high settings) does put the STOCK HD4870 below the GTX260 but the model in this thread is overclocked:

The HD4890 can be bought for around £120, the GTX275 for about £150 and the GTX285 for about £200

Also, if you have a SLI motherboard, a NVIDIA card may be the better choice for future upgrades, likewise if you have a CROSSFIRE capable motherboard, i would go ATI. Then when you start finding your system a bit old & slow,, you can bung in another card and get a big performance boost without having to get a new PC
