Seen figures of 1.6m in 10years.... but just 2 months ago I cut down a conifer that has been in for about 9 years that was supposed to be 1m in 10 years, and was already about 2.5m high, and enormously wide and bushy despite regular topping and cutting back!

I now tend to take these descriptions with a large pinch of salt, and automatically assume conifers are similar rampant weeds that Leylandii are and will mean the neighbours want to poison you and your pets for turning their home into a dungeon and knocking 20K off it's value!

if you are only going to keept hem in pots, they will always be easy to maintain and grow to a height that suits the pot. plant then in the ground and they are as big as your house in ten year

Google conifer followed by either Chamaecyparis Ellwoodii, Snow White or Empire and you'll find all the information you need. Leylandii are the big fellas.

Totally depends what type they are - we've got some that are about 20yrs old and only about 6ft, probably won't ever grow much bigger. Others half that age and were taller than the house before we got a nice travelling gentleman to remove them for £50! Conifers are lovely if well kept, but like your missus's bush, a right mess if you let them get out of control.
