Jesus, not a bad price, just hope they have finally got past the 25% failure rate for the platter and the non-starter for most NAS setups ;)

Not going to vote on this one as I have a 50/50 failure rate, won't work on my NAS but happy in the PC

Are those stats legit? Mine died last week... I haven't had a HD die for a long time so I thought it was just bad luck! Sending it to Samsung for an RMA, think I'll put a note in asking if could have 2 x 500GB instead judging by that failure rate...

Nothing like a bit of exaggeration! I know the 1Tb F1 drives had initial teething problems lasting about 3 months before the failure rates dropped to levels comparable with other manufacturers. However, I don't believe anywhere has accurate figures on failure rates for the F3 model - it is too new. In theory, because it uses 2 x 500Gb platters instead of 3 x 333Mb, the failure rate should be 33% less than the outgoing model. This would make it the most reliable drive on the market.

As for the non-starter in "most NAS setups". That is simply not true. Almost all the popular NAS appliances now support the Samsung F series with firmware updates. The problem was at the NAS end - the F series were running full 3GB/s speeds and some NAS appliances couldn't cope with the speed until they got their firmware update. There will always be some NAS appliances where they won't work because the manufacturers have failed to provide a suitable firmware update. However, this is becoming less common.

I've picked one of these up, it's currently in this computer ready for lots of files

It's running a lot cooler than my other drives, around 5-6degreesC at the moment.

In theory indeed! That only takes account of one specific failure mode involving a head. There are plenty more such as motor, bearing, electronics which have nothing to do with the number of platters.

I bought two from Scan this week, have them in Raid Stripping.

I never had any problems with the F1 that has been reported, I think it was down to a version of the NVidia chipset.

I now have 6 hard disks in my PC.

1 x 330GB Seagate
2 x 330GB Seagate Raid 0 Stripe
1 x 1TB Samsung F1
2 x 1TB Samsung F3 raid 0 Stripe

Thinking of taking out the Seagate drivess and using as backup.

I have the F3 drives sitting on top of a PC and they feel warm but not hot.

My first hard disk was 50MB and that cost over £300 inc. interface sticking out of the side, I used it on an Amiga 500.

My first PC Hard disk was 210MB and that was £130 in the ISA and Visa interface days.
The interfaces were used for serial/parallel, graphic, audio, IDE/FDD, modem, mouse.
Sometimes you needed an interface for the mouse or scanner.

Lowtrqwler is well informed and correct though nobody [other than the source, not even Samsung's localised techies] knows the real score but delays and other "gravevines" do offer an indication. Been through quite a few of the F1s and running a couple of F3 for the past month. Seems OK and better than the F1s and the 1TB WD Caviar Black. Only time will tell, not even the "source" knows when it comes to realtime reliability which includes "user-handling". One thing's for sure, 500GB platter technology are on par for the trailblazers with the likes of WD going onto other "viewpoints" to push the "nudge-nidge, wink-wink" factor to stir the imaginatives. The platter/areal-density has always been the main obstacle in HDD technology [and HDD reliability is mostly about realitime platter defect management] much like the CPU has always been the main obstacle in driving computing technology. Errors of "statistics" relating to construction and the mechanics/electronics are secondary to the platter.

If you're referring to his (?) assertion about reliability vs number of platters, then this would back up what I said (first search result from "hard disk failure modes").

Brilliant price! I currently have an F1 750gb but could be tempted by one of these at this price.
