Seems a good price for a 1TB NAS drive. Heat added. I have some questions...

Could you use the USB connection on the front to connect another external drive and increase total capacity?

Does the pre-installed s/w include a media server that is recognised by a Playstation 3?

very good price for the features u get in this drive, have some heat. AFAIK the usb wont be able to connect to other external storage devices. I think the extra usb port is the type B connection not A. Type B connections are found at the back of external USB hard drives, printers scanners etc.

Surely 1tb should be enuff for all your videos and music.

Usb port on the front is type A like on a usb pen drive. You can plug in other usb storage devices and they will appear as a separate folder in the lacie openshare. I have the 500gb version and have just tested this to confirm.

EDIT: According to this http://www.playstationleague.co.uk/f...ic.php?p=52844 it is compatable with with the PS3 is a slight pain to set up.

hmm didnt know nas could do that but then again i never owned one thanks for correcting me.

This is a great NAS and I can also confirm the use of the USB drive to increase capacity. You can also setup auto transfer (backup) of the USB device to the NAS on connection.

Guys u need to google around before u decide to buy this nas drive. Ive read a few bad reviews such as the HD going dead and speed is slow. It has won awards for being one of the best looking drives.... but who cares if the reliability is crap.

FYI... Asda was flogging the 500gb version for £35 a couple of months ago!

Thanks for the advice, was considering either this route or just getting a Samsung F2 1.5TB and sticking it in my server. The samsung gets good reviews on newegg so looks like its the way to go.

Hi,

I decided to consolidate all my back up drives and after much research decide on a qnap 219 NAS / Server ( which you can import in cheaply ( hong kong buyer ) from ebay for about 235 ) ok, its not as cheap but it gets rave reviews for being reliable and its a server as well - FTP client - printer server - media centre - hot swappable bays - raid 1 , 0 ) plus there loads help on the qnap site / forum - and they are always do up dates and tweaks.

A mate of mine has one of these, and they're not that quick. Has Gigabit ethernet, but sustained transfers are only around 8 megabytes/sec, which is top end 100Mb ethernet speeds. For wireless use you'd never notice.

Not a bad price tho.

1.
the amount of money you spend will have a direct effect on the value of the data you are storing.
2.
buy the biggest nas (in terms of storage) you can afford
3.
make sure the NAS you get supports 2TB hard drives
4.
make sure the NAS you get has some form of RAID (you really want raid 5)
5.
dont be cheap when it comes to that mp3 collection or family photos!

I would agree with all of the above - not sure about the RAID 5 ( as the cost will really start to climb for as mutli bay unit ) personally i have a 2 bay NAS running a raid 1 - with an external drive with scheduled back up once a week

Thanks for all the info on this thread - It looks like this one isn't for me.

Can anyone reccomend another one - I'm really after a 4 bay NAS to stream video to a media PC connected to the telly via some homeplugs.

edit - was thinking about putting 2x1tb drives in it to start with then adding another 2 in a couple of months (assuming I can do that!)

Well after alot looking around for a NAS - i decided on a qnap 219 because the sheer reliability - all be it more cost wise then the consumer offerings with no were near glowing reviews: ( the netgear - Lykysis )

If you after a 4 bay without breaking the bank - the qnap TS-419 Turbo would be a good runner ( and a check on ebay - international sellers could get this to you for just under £400 ) i used an ebayer called " FP outlet " to get my qnap 219 ( plus as it was declared as a USB enclosure - which it is - i only got charged a couple of pounds VAT )
