High electricity bill (advice/help appreciated)

POSTED BY: Bane17 1 month, 1 week ago

I moved in to my property, a small two bedroomed flat, in March 2008. Since living there, I had tried contacting E.on twice about my electric bill and on both occasions got no where. Admittedly, I then left it.

Just recently however I have had a bill come through from E.on which was addressed to my landlord and stated he had set it up for a yearly bill. I sent this bill on to him in which he dealt with it and E.on then sent me an amended bill from the date I moved in with an estimate of £750 for the 20 months I'd been there.

When I rang them up to settle this bill however they asked me to take an accurate reading which I did last night and now the new total is £1,800 with me using an average of £90 a month apparently. To pay this off and to keep on top of my bills going forward they want £230 a month!!!!

Now I understand and expect quite a high bill but I'm not too sure if the full price of the bill is correct. Like I say:

- Small 2 bedroom flat
- Property is all electric heating (no gas)
- For the first 12 months my partner lived with me and was at home during the day, whilst I was out working.
- For last 7 months I have lived on my own and I work during the day and was hardly home at night, so next to no electric would have been used.
- I'm quite conscious in the fact I always make sure plugs are turned off if something isn't in use such as TV, microwave, etc...

Does this bill sound right to anyone else or know a way to reduce it? I really can't afford to pay that much a month.

Thanks in advance.

depends do you run your heating alot, as you have no gas that would cost you more i think, if you talk to E.on they have to be more resonable if you can't afford to pay it, you might need to seak advise from your local citizen advice bureau

Did you think you were never going to get billed?

You can't afford to pay that much but you really should have thought about that before 'forgetting' to pay the bills.

Firstly, did you take a note of the meter reading when you first moved into the property? That's your starting point, as you can then work out just how much electricity you've used.

Secondly, you need to know whatr tariff you're on, and how much your electricity cost per kwh, this information should be on your bill. If not, phone up Eon and ask.

Thirdly, this should allow you to "roughly" calculate what your bill should be. It won't be exact because tariffs change depending what time you're using the electicity, overall consumption etc. If you work out a rough figure it should let you know if the bill you've received is in the right ball park...

Seems like good advice to deal with the outstanding amount.
Looking forward, make sure that you are on their cheapest tariff (probably one of their online ones). I'm with Eon and their website is quite helpful in that respect. Also, get the billing sorted so you receive a quarterly bill and for your own records, take a note of your meter reading regularly. This way you can be sure you won't get stung again.

Think you need to write them a letter and say whats been going in. Tell them that you called them on X and X dates and that you wanted a bill. You would need to show that you made an effort to try to get a bill (ie give them the dates and times you called them)

Bill sounds about right with electric heating, I'm afraid it's suck it up and pay up before you get disconnected (surprised you haven't already been) and end up with higher bills then

You will have to either pay thr £230pm or Only other option is disconnection and get a pre payment meter installed which they will do unless you pay then what they are asking. £230 prob sounds right. I work at Citizens Advice BTW and I have come across this before

£1000 a year for all the electric appliances plus heating. Doesn't sound too bad. Ask for a breakdown of the bill. If the majority of the cost was for the first year when your partner was at home during the winter months it is your heating that is pushing it so high.

im fairly sure that if they didn't bill you for 20 months then they are supposed to give you the same amount of time to pay the arrears off, which won't help much but should knock about £50 a month off the bill.
