Hi ---Kate---
I'm sure you haven't explained this properly, but my understanding is that you can get a FREE upgrade for £15.
Wouldn't a free upgrade normally cost £0.00?
I'm a wee bit confused
Andy

It's the one that's been advertised as a "free upgrade" when buying the vista laptops recently (like the Inspiron 17 from Carphone Warehouse last week) The £15 covers p&p etc...

Is it not free by way of a download, but £15 + etc, etc, etc if you need a disc?

That's what I thought anyway.....

Free means free! I would not pay anything if I wanted Windows 7.

Btw, if your are entitled to an upgrade, you don't need to get your copy from a specific supplier. Your license will cover any upgrade from any source as long as you upgrade to the same version of your original Vista (e.g. Vista Primium to W7 Premium, Vista Ultimate to W7 Ultimate, etc.)

Well, I'm thanking you for the info, and am quite pleased the "free" one is ONLY £15. I think Toshiba are charging £28.

Bought a Dell laptop from Carphone Warehouse last week that offered a free upgrade to Win 7 - now I see it's £15 not free!

I have already lodged a complaint with CPW.

If they do not provide me with a free upgrade or agree to reimburse me the £15, then it will be a simple matter of misleading advertising to be dealt with by my Local Trading Standards Office.

At the point of sale, their web site indicated NO cost! I have the screenshots. Indeed they still claim it's free ...

http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/news/latest-news

Only if you bothered to click on the Microsoft "How to Upgrade" link and traversed several FAQ links is there any indication of possible cost.

You are asked to click through to your specific PC Vendor site..

When you finally land on the DELL page it also repeats the coy mantra of only possible cost - it's only when you register with DELL and bother to proactively log on your account that you find out the truth - that it's going to cost you £15!

Unfortunately for CPW - they did not indicate this cost or any possibility of cost at the point of sale.

Peeved when the default location in the upgrade order sytem is USA and the cost is $0.00. However as soon as you change that to UK you are presented with a cost of £15 per upgrade! Does anyone know whether one upgrade can be used on a number of identical systems (ie the CPW offer)?

I doubt it as the new upgrade will most likely come with a new Product Key as they did last time with the Vista updates.
