Apple Ipod Touch 8GB 2nd Gen only £129.99 at Comet.
This is available for store collection only (click and reserve) and from what I can see there may not be much stock around. But if you're after one it's worth a try to see if it's in any of your local stores.
It also states by clicking and reserving one of these you also receive a £15 Itunes voucher when collecting.

As far as I can make out there is no significant difference between the 8GB 2nd and 3rd gen.

it has the new software (could buy it and stick on second gen) other than that is just a faster processor in the new one and a few minor tweaks

8GB is not much at all given the amount of apps available. I have about 8GB in apps alone on my iPhone (32GB), with more space used by MP3, video etc.

Better to buy a 1st Gen 32GB iPod Touch rather than this one IMO, for a little more money. Plus 2nd gens have a yellowish tinge to the screen.

Just to let you guys know thtthe 2nd gen and 3rd gen version of the 8GB Ipod touch are identical hardware wise, the only difference is the software. The hardware differences are only on the 32/64gb versions of the ipod touches.

I got one for my son a week ago (for xmas) from the Apple store for £170. It's a refurb, but was delivered brand spanking new with all seals and bits of plastic etc. Plus you get the full 1 year warranty.

The 3rd gen one is £60 more. For that you get a faster CPU and bluetooth, but still no camera, GPS or compass (as in the 3GS). (I'd have gone for that one if it had those things.)

I then downloaded (for £3 I think) the latest OS (3.12?) from iTunes, so the interface etc is now identical to the 3rd gen

I've set it up & filled it with apps and stuff and put it away in its box for xmas day He will then be able to play most of the games I have on my 3GS, and also multiplay with me as it has wifi.

I'm looking for an iPod Touch for my son for Xmas. He's only 7yrs. Keeps telling us he wants an iPhone (no way I'm letting him have a phone at his age, let alone the cost!). I don't think he'll mind too much whichever ever generation it is or even know the difference for that matter!

I'm wondering will an 8Gb be enough for a kid as young as him? Not too bothered about getting him a refurb either, just as long as there's no cosmetic faults and it's at the right price.

My son is 8. The reasons I went for 32GB over the 8GB is that it means I can easily sync from my account for his iPod without worrying about having to remove stuff to make space all the time & because the price difference was minimal between the the 32GB and 16GB. Nearly 1GB gets lost with formatting and OS, then there's the MP3 usage.

Cheers for that. Have read a few other comments and it does seem that 8Gb will be a bit too small. Do you think 7yrs old is old enough to buying him an iPod?

There are plenty of suitable games for that age, plus there are plenty of suitable kids audiobooks and even a few podcasts. At the end of the day you know your own child. My friend bought one for his 4 year old son and he loves racing games on it, which are easy to play because of the tilt control
