You do not need to have played the original "F.E.A.R" before "F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin". The previous storyline is disclosed in a series of in-game notes you can retrieve & intelligence reports relayed to you as you play.

I have the second title & would recommend it, but I never bothered with the first in the series.
