The Cooler - £1 @ Poundland

£1.00

166°

FOUND BY: Film Brain 2 weeks, 5 days ago

IN-STORE ONLY. Next best is £5.37 at SelectCheaper.

Bernie Lootz (William H Macy) is an unlucky guy. Everything he touches turns bad. However, his ill fortune is actually the one thing he depends upon to do his job to the best of his abilities; Bernie Lootz is the best 'cooler' in town.

Working in one of Las Vegas' few remaining golden-era Casinos, Bernie is employed by the ruthless Shelly (Alec Baldwin in an Oscar nominated role) to end the winning streak of anyone whose luck is on the up. But life in the bad luck lane has taken its toll and, after working for Shelly for years, Bernie has decided to move on. Then he meets the hard-bitten Natalie (Maria Bello) and life takes a turn for the better. But as his fortunes change, so does his ability to 'cool' a winning streak, and soon an unhappy Shelly decides to make sure that Bernie never feels happiness again...

Part hard-edged thriller, part well-observed comedy, this unique and unconventional tale of love, luck, money and revenge features powerhouse performances from some of Hollywood's finest stars and is one of the year's best films.

The films out of poundland 9/10 they are not the same print as you would buy like online, most of them look like a vhs copy.

It's not a moan mate at the deal you have put on, just saying of late thats what they are putting out

Not true, unless you are buying Laurel and Hardy and John Wayne DVDs, which are public domain items and are thus treated terribly. If you buy films like this, its the same as any other good-quality DVD (has a DTS track too). I've never bought the Laurel and Hardy or John Wayne movies, because they always look more than a little suspect.

Agree.
It all depends on the label.Had some good stuff from Poundland.
Bought Cat O'nine Tails yesterday, not brilliant quality but i've never seen a good print of this anyway.
Same with Rock n Roll High School...when you've got a cheaply made film it'll look cheap no matter who releases it or where you buy it from.

Would that be A Bucket of Blood and some of the Halloween stuff? That's certainly not major labels (like the Poundland deals I post) and it dosen't surprise me. I've seen that version of A Bucket of Blood and it is absymal.

I've bought lots of the Poundland DVD's and all have been fine; Oceans 11, Oceans 12, Escape to Victory, Spartan, Mutiny On The Bounty etc.
Obviously can't account for everything they sell, but I've had no problems.

Oh and The Cooler is a fine film indeed.

Excellent film for those that haven't seen it, definitely worth picking it up if you're passing by a pound shop on your way home from work

Yes very original and highly entertaining. Willaim H Macey always puts in a good performance. I can't remember any films he has been in that are bad.
