Bike advice required....what do I need?

POSTED BY: Trickyjabs 3 weeks, 3 days ago

I am looking at getting a bike, probably after Xmas and would be grateful if anyone could give me some advice.

I'll need something pretty tough as I'm about 100kgs and I'm planning to do a charity cycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groats, following a few weeks/months of training!

Obviously I want to spend as litle as possible, but appreciate you get what you pay for.

Are there any particular parts/makes to look out for OR avoid?
What are the value 'must-haves' in terms of brakes/suspension/gears/frames etc?
Is it best to get a ready made bike or go for a mix and match job?

Many thanks for any advice, rep for useful ideas.

I take it you're going to do some off road cycling?

You need at least a hard tail mountain bike but if you are doing a lot of off road i'd invest in a full suspension, you would need to pay at least £1500 for a good full suspension one, what budget were you looking to spend?

It would probably be mostly on the road, but with the ability to go off road too. Probably be looking to spend no more than about £500. I appreciate this isn't much when you start getting serious bike gear, but can't go much higher than that.

Sounds to me you'll be mostly on road, a decent hybrid will suit you best. Look at the Kona Dew range, great quality bikes, should suit you to a tee.

Cheers for the suggestion. Just found these Kona Dew for £229.99, is that too cheap/basic, or would it do the trick?

(Seems to get quite good reviews)

Also, I'm 6'2" tall, what size frame would you recommend? Thanks for advice.

would depend on inside leg as well as height, but either the 60 or 62cm. Best to find a stockist nearby so you can try one. There are a few in the Dew range, obviously going up in price but also quality of parts fitted. A decent bike shop will be able to advise you of what will suit your needs.
i would always reccomend to get the best you can afford, and you should be able to get the dew plus or even dew deluxe for under your £500
