this is old tech, much better to get a smaller more powerful torch with a "Cree" emitter form somewhere like www.dealextreme.com, voted cold I'm afraid

True.. but thats unbranded stuff and also it seems a little unreliable..?

"Bottomline: The most cons is the bad heatsink, in hi mode for more than 5 minutes risk of burn the led is hi!"

anyway, main point is Maglite = Reliable correct? or at least comparability to the one you linked. you cannot disagree that this product isnt at a great price .

I would 100% always rely on mechanical achievement than electronic achievement.. simply because mechanics if done properly is much more robust than electronics.

Dont get me wrong, electronics is great and will be the future (hence why im in masters doing it) but for something so simple and yet priority is for it to be reliable I dont see it should be filled with "on the budget" electronics and on the budget casing.

On the other hand if you wanted something like a high powered torch and reliable get some decent brand electronics with warranty and it'll be best for both worlds (this wont cost £6 anytime soon tho)

D'oh. Cree are widely regarded as the best manufacturer of LED units.

I've never said the LED was the issue, surely a high powered led would need significant standard of voltage regulation etc etc. so im assuming thats not made by Cree? Next, external casing is not made by Cree. so my previous post is still quite valid.

LED's are reliable, and can be very easily without much money, its the voltage regulations/drivers which kills it.

security etc ... the big maglights could knock someone out cold. Too heavy for me, but hot for those that want one.

No, you merely dismissed the suggestion as "unbranded" rubbish.

Big Maglites are good if you intend to carry your torch as an offensive weapon, but if you want a torch for its intended purpose i.e. to illuminate then there are far better solutions, I'm afraid. Even my value Tesco pocket cheapy (2AA, 3W Cree) outperform my 2D and 3D Maglites!

Vote the deal, not the alternative. There is always something better as an alternative. OP is informing us on the deal which is hot from me as these torches are usually quite dear. I know there are alternatives and some are even cheaper (a candle for example) but if I find a cheap candle, I shall post it as a deal.

I haven't voted either way; it costs £11 incl delivery, which is more than TK Maxx have been charging for them recently (£9.99). Just replying to the OP's comments that the alternatives were no good.

Stop twisting what I've said. RE-READ what I've written. I've never implied it was rubbish or of the sorts. I've talked about reliability. something rubbish and something with lower QC can be very different.

Edited: "grammar"

Its about 1kg? lol I dont plan to knock anyone out, its more of a deterrent. There were some youtube clips to learn how to use a maglite defensively to disarm an offender etc.

Just be sure not to go into an Engineering career. It sucks compaired to most. Poor pay, long hours, bad conditions, bit like engineering degrees.. Be an IT geek instead and get paid twice as much for fixing people's computers.
