Building a PC for around £500

POSTED BY: Arif123 3 weeks, 3 days ago

I wrote a very detailed post and it got deleted grrrr
oh well let's try again!

Here's what I'm looking to put inside it (LOL that sounds dodgey)

CPU- http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-955-BlackEdition-Sok-AM3-32GHz-8MB-Total-Cache-125W-Retail

Motherboard- http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-M4A785TD-V-EVO-AMD-785G-AM3-PCI-E-20(x16)-DDR3-1800(OC)-1600(OC)-SATA-II-SATA-RAID-VGA

Ram 8GB- http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR3/DDR3+1333+%28PC3-10666%29/Arianet+2GB+PC3-10666+DDR3+SDRAM+?productId=34514

1TB HDD (already have a 1TB external as well) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1TB-Seagate-ST31000520AS-Barracuda-LP-SATA-3Gb-s-5900rpm-32MB-Cache-51-ms

Blu ray reader (CD/DVD writer) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pioneer-BDC-202-5x-Blu-Ray-Reader-Combo-DVDDL-Writer-internal-Black-OEM

Will check the prices on a case when I've decided on the insides. How big a PSU would I need, and how many fans?

I haven't looked at many sites for deals (as you can tell), but would this make a decent machine? Should I forget about a built in graphics motherboard and go for a graphics card? Will be plugging it into my TV. Keyboard and mouse I'm not too worried about, that's dead last on my list.

Been a while since I built a computer so tell me if I'm missing anything :P

The HD 4200 should be fine unless you're planning to make heavy use of it's processing capabilities (e.g. gaming). The large amount of memory suggest you may be doing something like that though.

You've only got single hard drive and no graphics card so whatever the entry level PSU is these days is fine (300-400W) and whatever one or two fan configuration the case works best with will equally well suffice.

Obviously, the keyboard, mouse and screen are the most important bits but as any of them will attach to any computer it doesn't matter where they are on your list.

The only thing that immediately strikes me as possibly missing is a TV card as using the TV's internal tuner won't allow you to record it or watch it in a window on your desktop.

I'm not really a PC gamer but I might get into it if I can run them! Would it be better to buy a motherboard with no inbuilt graphics, and just buy a decent graphics card so I have all bases covered?

It's a trade off, if you put a powerful graphics card in then it will use more power and generate more heat, as well as slightly adding to the noise of the system.

Personally I'm keen on gaming, but only you can decide how likely it is that you'll use it. If you want a compromise solution you could buy a bigger power supply (say, 500-600W) so you can drop a graphics card into the system in a few months time but not have much effect on the system until then.
