I grew some of these last year (not the ones from Lidl though), and they were great, especially if you like growing things but can't because of the season. They take a couple of weeks to reach eating size, but once they do, they grow very very quickly and they can go from button sized to a couple of inches across in a day or two! My advice is to not leave them too long or the texture will deteriorate, and ensure that after your first harvest is complete, you keep the compost moist to avoid it drying out (in which case it's very difficult to get it back to being able to grow more in).

I had one like that which never seemed to work in the past (from B & Q too - the white ones). I left it in the shed to use the box and soil later.

When I got new spores - i got the box from the shed and it was full of mushrooms!

Cannot tell you where to get for less but seems a waste of time this is my opinion

For those of us who watch what we eat, enjoy home growing etc, this type of pack is great, and the price is good too.

Fungi have a mind of their own sometimes, and will often live in the soil for years, choosing when to produce their 'fruit'. I don't discard packs, as their spores or underground systems may still be active and good to produce more.

Is this your opinion as you are frequently referred to as something that looks mushroom shaped?

I'd be tempted. Is there any way to keep the growing for a longer or even continual season. i.e. let some drop their spores or replenish with more horse manure. (I understand this is a good growing medium and always wash my mushrooms very well)

The growing is EXTREMELY random - but seems to happen all at once rather than a few occasionally. Some boxes have managed 5 or 6 crops, but I have no idea if this is from the original contents or newly grown spores, but three is probably the average.


For me there is something very unappealing about growing them from manure, especially as a couple of boxes are normally kept on the top of the fridge (which is about 6 foot high).

You can also buy "plugs" which are dowels with spores that you insert into holes in damp wood left outside (such as when storms bring down tree, and they are cut into sections to be carted off - these are perfect to pick up and leave outside to provide the correct environment).
