EXPIRED - Buffalo 750GB Linkstation Live NAS - £84.99 @ Ebuyer

£84.99

291°

FOUND BY: sane 3 months, 6 days ago

STARTS: 03/11/2009

Networked attached storage box from Buffalo. Provides:
* 750GB of storage on your home network for backing up of all your home computers
* DLNA media server functionality, store you movies, videos, music, pics, and playback with PS3 or Xbox, etc.
* Printer server, hang your printer off it so it can be used by all PCs
* Access your files remotely
This unit is easily hackable to give you what is essentially a small, power-friendly server for your network, allowing such uses as:
* Mail server
* Web server
* Torrent Downloader
* Asterisk Telephone PBX server
* Newsgroup downloader
etc.

And should you want more space, the internal hard disk can be swapped out for a larger SATA drive (like the 1.5TB in mine). Power supply runs at ~10W in my configuration - low enough you can leave it on 24/7.

This might not be as good a deal as eBuyer's earlier sell off
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/429604/buffalo-hs-dh320gl-320gb-linkstatio
but if you are in the market for external storage it can do so much more than a dumb USB drive.

As described in the previous discussion (referenced above, that I can't seem to turn into a link) most of the answers can be found via http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Main_Page

Basically you crack open the OS (which is a Debian Linux derivative) and you can then install any normal linux package. You will often find someone has been there before you and step by step instructions exist. A job for someone who knows Linux, but not a major task.

Its not something I have done myself, but others have http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org...=+mail+server+

Not familiar with that drive myself, but judging by http://lacie.nas-central.org/wiki/Main_Page the hacking of it to do other tasks is much less developed. It also seems to have less functionality out-of-the-box.

I have one of these and have to say it's the dogs danglies. Running mine with the modded StevieWonder firmware, based on the newest Japanese Linkstaton Pro firmware and loaded with the Bit Torrent client and Twonky media server. The transfer speeds are superb compared to other NAS boxes I've used.

Hot for me.

PS there is a new version of the StevieWonder firmware - v2.24 with more functionality. I think v2.25 is nearly ready as well.

Edit: Oops, looks like v2.25 is already out, with Firefly & Fireplay for iTunes/Roku serving.

So it is! I hope it isn't that as I just bought one as I've been looking for a NAS.

Hi Morrk,

A little bit off topic I know, but where can I get info on how I can do all this. I have been looking at getting a replacement ext HDD for a while and was considering going down the route of NAS rather than just another ext drive. I would love to be able to stream my "family movies" to my PS3 and have all my itunes library able to be used across different computers on my network rather than just the main one. You seem pretty clued up on all this, so any info you can give or point me in the right direction would be great.

Cheers

Hi mate,

This particular drive will stream media to your ps3 and I believe also iTunes without having to change anything apart from some minor configuration as it is DLNA compliant.

You just need to connect it to your router, run the install CD, log into the drive using the web config page, it's really easy to set up. I would however suggest upgrading the firmware to the latest on the Buffalo website as I remember the older firmwares were a little flaky with the PS3 connection. This has now been resolved in 2.11.
