My PS3 has stopped reading discs completely

I updated my PS3 today (didn't pay much notice to what the update was) but it was so i could play PES 2010 online - part way through my first online game, it crashed. My PS3 was still on and responded when i held down the PS button. After a few mins i restarted it (via the controller). The console bleeped 3 times, but didn't actually restart, the screen just went black. After another minute or so, i switched it off manually using the button at the back of the console. I switched it back on no probs at all, but it isn't reading any discs whatsoever now. Everything else works fine, but it doesn't bring up the disc or DVD symbol at all. I've tried resetting various ways (including through PS3's 'safe mode', and am now in the middle of a 3 hour (!!!) format....

i had the console as part of a phone deal in April 08 and have treated it well with no other probs in the past (the warranty sticker is intact).

Has anyone else had any probs like this, and do you think i'm entitled to a replacement? i don't fancy forking out £200 on a new one, and i've heard it's about £180 for Sony to pick up a console and check it without any promise of a fix....

Out of warranty i'm afraid. If it's not reading anything it sounds like your drive has packed up.

Hey,

Best thing is to just give them a call and see what they say. Saying that ive heard sometimes they offer to fix it for free.

If its the blu-ray drive there qoute is £99. Mine was a 60gb so I had it fixed, nearly 8 months ago.

I had a similar problem - rang sony up and beacuse I just bought the PS3 (like under a month, when this happened) they told me to go back to where I bought it from and get a replacement.

Happene to me twice in warranty got a new one on my 3rd ps3 no problems so far, it is a common problem

thanks for the messages. not exactly what i was hoping for, but i guess it's my only choice. i'll wait until i'm in work and call from the work phone though. take that sony!

If you have any friends that work at Game or similar they can replace it for you. Have a friend who works there and he just swapped out my 360 when it had RROD

i've just contacted ps3 support centre - it'll cost £99 for a repair or replacement (that includes courier costs). they said it'd take max of one week to fix and return...

i've got the old 40gb model ps3, so i've considered buying a new one for around 200, but i think 99 is probably better eh?

you may get £50 for your current one so put that towards a new slim 120gb
