Specsavers £10 eye test vouchers - How much is the test itself?

POSTED BY: Cuddy 3 weeks, 2 days ago

It's been a while since my parents took an eye examination and they asked me if I could find any opticians that might have an offer on with regards to eye tests. I happened to have a couple of Specsaver's "£10 Eye Test voucher"s that were handed out in a tube station recently.

Not having used Specsaver's before I don't know how much they usually charge and I'm pretty sure it's got be more than £10 otherwise the voucher would simply say "Free eye test!"

So, how much do they normally charge?

I think Specsavers are £21, dependent on ages and circumstances :
You can get free sight tests if you:

•are under 16
•are 16-18 and in full-time education
•are 60 or over
•are a diagnosed glaucoma patient
•have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
•are 40 or over and are a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter of a diagnosed glaucoma patient
•have been diagnosed as diabetic
•are registered as blind or partially sighted
•have been prescribed certain complex lenses, such as certain types of bifocal, or powerful lenses
•are someone whose sight test is carried out through the hospital eye department as part of the management of your eye condition

Standard cost of a test is £26. Actual cost is a lot more but the fee of £26 is partly susidised by govt. Opticians agree to keep charge low, so govt allows them to charge much higher fees on frames / lenses. Just compare cost of glasses here to abroad.

Opticians now feeling the pinch. Savvy glassses wearers turning to internet suppliers, or foreign shores for a fraction of the price. Just take a look at Quidco

Most at least do some deals for money off. BUT have not paid for a test for many years now. If you look hard enough, always someone doing free eye tests

Thanks for the info everyone!

bitseylango, your list has proved very helpful. My father has just passed the 60 mark a few months back so that's him sorted for a free test. It looks like my mother will have to pay from £10 to £15 after the £10 voucher is used

As well as the people listed in post 4 these people are eligible for free eye tests too, there's other info on the link also.
You are entitled to full help with health costs, including sight tests, if you or your partner receive:

Income Support,
Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance,
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or
Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.
You can also get a free NHS sight test if you’re entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate.

If you’re eligible for help with NHS costs under the NHS Low Income Scheme, you can claim some or all of the cost of sight tests for you, your partner and your children.
