the doctors advice help.

POSTED BY: greyparrot 3 weeks, 1 day ago

right guys i have been to the doctors again this morning as i thought i had arthritis in my knees they did blood tests 2 weeks ago to see what it was anyway went back this morning and they have confirmed it is arhritis but in my bones not my blood you see when i had my daughter nearly 6 years ago not long after i fell and cracked my knees on the floor and ever since i have had bad pain from them so doctor thinks it has been brought on early by my fall. now heres the problem i have been told i am overweight and need to exercise not only to lose the weight but improve my knees now i am only 26 i do not want to be cripped by the time i am 30. i know i wont just go out and walk about on my own and was actually thinking of joining a gym but my closest is 2.6 miles away but i love the thought that i can swim and use the steam room etc after i have had a workout.my only other complextion is i would have to go alone and the thought of doing it all on my tod terrifies me. so what can i do please give me some ideas.

I was in the same position and I went along to the gym by myself and they were so friendly and helpful that I did not mind going the second time, you soon recognise people that go regularly and the staff are trained to put you at your ease .So if I were you I would go along and try it

Also they will advise exercises that are good for you and which ones to avoid .Swimming is one of the best for knees

Most people go to the gym on their own. I think once you get over the initial first time you will be fine, plus you normally get shown round the first time you go. Ask when the quiet times are. Failing that go swimming when it's a womens only session, in our pool we only get 4 or 5 women in the afternoon session.

I'm not a fan of the gym as it bores me stupid, i used to go to our local leisure centre, so it was only a small council run one. The staff were great though and i was like you, i thought everyone would look at me, but no one is the slightest bit interested cos they are too busy doing their own thing. You really need advice on the best excercise to do though, something pretty low impact i guess as you don't want to aggravate your condition. Swimming and the heat of a steam room would be ideal imo.

Take something with you to listen to music on headphones, you will be nervous the first time but you'll find most people go on thier own to the gym!

And as Sy says, your better to get over that fear than to be a cripple

Good luck!

i prefer the gym on my own, i have tendonitis in my knee (used to be both), and do low impact stuff in the gym. i thought it would be boring in there too, but once you gt into its good push yourself a little bit more every week, adn then chill out in the steam rooms saunas etc.
and if you go to a gym with decent equipemnt you wont get bored, my gym has TVs up on the walls, and most of the stuff has built in screens so you can plug your headphones in and choose what channel to watch, they have sky sports, mtv film channels as well as the normal channels, sky news etc.

Alot of gyms do classes these days aswell, quite often included in the monthly fee. They can be quite a good way to exercise, as there's an instructor there giving you encouragement etc,

i am in the same boat so to speak im 27 and i have a syndrome that effects my joints and i need to sort myself out, i dislocated my knee for the hundreth time and tore my acl on top of it so will be quite high odds for needing knee replacements or a wheelchair in my future.

i can do the gym equipment aside from walking so i swim, i also go to an aqua class this supports my joints while getting exercise. dont be scared of going alone. take your ipod ignore the world and do this for your mobility as it sucks when it has gone.

I was going to suggest that too, Aquarobics is good fun. Isn't there anyone you could drag along with you for moral support?
