No Its to tall. Besides it runs hot which is why it has a heatsink.

Excellent drives, more refined I find that the original drives also... I have had a 74GB for years now and loved it, the 300gb drive set me back 200 quid about 4 months ago and worth every penny.

I don't really see the point in these anymore, when a good SSD can be had for about the same price. Having used both a Velociraptor and an SSD as my boot drive, I'd take the latter every time.

please show me where i can get a 300gb ssd drive for £146.

ssd's are still pretty expensive... this is a good alternative if you are after a fast boot drive with decent capacity .

Why buy a Velociraptor? Serious question. If it's for speed, an SSD will blow it away completely with the added benefits of no noise, lower power consumption, less heat, etc. It can't even begin to match an SSD as a boot drive (and yes, SSDs are available at this kind of price).

One of the new 2TB 7200rpm WD drives will give over six times the capacity and in most situations performs similarly to the Velociraptor. £139 is a great price for a VR, but the reason the price is coming down is the same reason WD has abandoned 10,000rpm consumer drives - they're obsolete.

because... its the closest you can get to a budget boot drive with both good speed and good capacity.

how can a 2tb 7200rpm drive preform the same as a 10000rpm raptor?

The ssd you linked to is 80gb.. compared to 300gb. These days 80gb is just not sufficient for a decent boot drive... agreed if its JUST speed you are after then get an ssd.. and if its just capacity your after get a wd caviar or something.. but for me this is ideal.. as i get a bit of both. Its the best performance boot drive (capacity and speed) avaliable for a man on a budget.

im sure this is a good price for one, but raptor's are a rip off in terms of the tiny extra performance you get out of one. in fact, modern drives like the Sammy F3's perform just as well as raptors overall.

It's a 300GB conventional hard drive and it's expensive, it might be fast but a decent SSD outstrips it in performance. Buy a 128GB SSD and be done with it if you want performance.

Technology is of course getting better all the time, have a look at this fella :

Good deal, but like DrRamtop says new 2TB 7200rpm HDs are getting very fast now, and the speed increase of Velociraports is becoming less and less noticeable, maybe a couple seconds in most HD intensive tasks.

Personally I'd get a big 7200rpm HD and hold out for SSDs to get a little cheaper.

good deal for a raptor HOT HOT!

had my 74gig raptor from few years backa nd its going out now.. so tempting but was also going to wait for SSD's to get cheaper hmmmmm!

SSDs are not that reliable actually. If you look more into it. They are great when completely blank but speed decreases as they fill up and files get deleted etc. Novatech have had lots of returns due to the drives not living up to expectations.
