Advice about Netbooks Needed

POSTED BY: kelly_o_fanatic 2 weeks, 6 days ago

Mum is thinking of getting dad a netbook for christmas, only problem is, that means I have to find one! I am not completely sure what I am looking for when it comes to netbooks so could do with some advice on -

What spec to look for
What size to look for
Best brands
Best places to look for a netbook (online please!)

Some things you might need to know -

Wouldnt get a Dell (have had problems with dell laptops and desktops and would not use them again)
He will probably only be using it occasionally
He wants it to do his blog (he has a very successful music blog site)
Dont really want to spend more then £300 - £350
He likes his Sony Vaio laptop (so are sony netbooks any good?)

Thanks for your time and all advice is appreciated. Rep will be given.

I've got a 10" Toshiba and it's OK. Certainly much better than my daughter's old 8.9" Acer One. But, to be honest, I don't really use the netbook that much. It's OK when I'm travelling but I find it nowhere near as good as either a laptop or desktop for general use at home.

I don't think that there's really that much to choose between netbooks. Most 10" screen netbooks look very similar and have the same processor and size of hard drives in them. The only choice you seem to get is the colour of the case and whether you want to pay more for a "premium" brand like Sony.

As for getting them, surprisingly Amazon and Tesco are often cheaper than the more traditional online PC sellers like ebuyer and dabs.

You might like to look here

I've not tried one of these but Novatech make good laptops and generally have a good reputation. And this one is only £240 with Windows 7 installed. Most of the other sellers are still shipping with XP and 7 is reckoned to be the future of netbooks.

purely depends on what it is needed for.
If its just for net surfing, and listening to music an Acer Aspire one will do the job.
If its needed for other stuff, such as gaming then a higher spec. netbook would be needed.

Thanks for the advice (rep on its way)

He uses his laptop at home, but this will be so that he can do his music blog if he is out somewhere or when he works away (already has to take his work laptop which he cant blog on, clothes, work stuff - so cant really take his laptop as well). He has CDs sent to him daily so he cant really go a day without blogging!

Definitely wont be gaming

netbooks dont have cd/dvd drives, so he would have to caqrry around a external drive in that case, just letting you know, i highly reccomend the samsung N110, samsung are part of the luxary end of the netbook market, and the N110 has an exceptional 9hr battery life, which i love. its an awesome netbook cosmetically and for a netbook does well. theres £300 in pcworld atm i think, i bought mine for 330 a couple months back though

Thanks for the advice, battery life is one of the things I will be looking for. Will take a look at the one you have mentioned

He gets sent CDs by band and a few record companies which he then reviews on his website, he also get sent MP3s to listen to and add to his blog. Listens to the CDs in the car though and can always use cd walkman or something. Its the writing his blog thats important, rarely listens to the CDs through his laptop. Thanks for the warning though

Hi

I've got 3 x Acer 8.9" Netbook (wife & kids) and an Acer 10" Netbook.
All are very good netbooks and work well with Linux & XP.

Also got one of these for work:

Just a thought but it might be a good idea for him to try out a netbook before buying one. I found it nearly impossible to type on the Acer 8.9" because the keys are small and close together. The Toshiba 10" is a lot better but still not as good as a 15" laptop. If he does a lot of text work, he might find the netbook quite hard work.

Will be a christmas present so cant get him to try it out, but knowing this I will go and test a few out and see what I think before I order one. I will know whether or not its suitable for him. Is not something I would of considered though, so thanks!
