Does getting a Mobile unlock code void it's warranty?

POSTED BY: robot1000 2 weeks, 21 hours ago

I purchased a mobile contract (LG GC900 Viewty Smart) through Orange earlier this year and cancelled in August because of the contract change. I then signed up for an O2 contract and purchased an Unlock code online. The mobile phone is now faulty and LG are telling me that I have voided the warranty by purchasing an unlock code online.

What I want to know is why should it make a difference to the condition of the mobile phone where I purchased the code from. At the end of the day I would be getting the same code whether purchasing from Orange or from an online retailer. Why should that have any affect on my warranty?

Secondly, I found the following on the LG Warranty page:

2. WHAT THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER :
(2) Defects or damages from abnormal use, abnormal conditions, improper
storage. exposure to moisture or dampness, unauthorised modifications,
unauthorised connections, unauthorised repair, neglect, abuse, accident,
alteration, improper installation, or other acts which are not the fault of LG,
including damage caused by shipping, blown fuses, spills of food or liquid.

Where does it say that I'm not covered if I use an unlock code?

I would appreciate some information on this, as before speaking with them again, I would like to how me unlocking my phone (through a code, therefore no cables) can void the warranty

Thanks in advance

If they say it's void unfortunately it's void, take it as a learning curve and move on

The latest phones, don't have unlocking software released for them yet, so if you use unofficial unlocking codes they are usually generated from an unofficial source/program.

Your best bet is just to wait a few weeks, when new software will be released so you will be able to unlock your phone for £10-£15 from online or a phone shop

That phrase probably covers unlocking.

Why not just not mention that you had a third party unlock it?

Theres a reason LG should stick to making washing machines and fridges.

Unlocking a Nokia via code does not void the warranty - after all why should it? Lock codes are generally unique for each phone hence they don't know you have unlocked it officially or unofficially.

ASK them to prove you used an unauthorized method, if they cannot you are in the right.

ASK them to explain to you HOW an unlock code can damage a phone? All I can say is stand your ground.

Wouldn't they be able to see that the code wasn't requested from Orange

I might just go through Orange instead, hopefully they'll just replace the mobile

Perhaps - even so that is being really really picky. Nokia have never questioned me about locked/unlocked phone.

Don't let them screw you is what I say. Ultimately ask them how an unlock code can damage a phone.
