Can anyone recommend a decent model car for £1000 - must be automatic

POSTED BY: Mrs.Z 2 weeks, 4 days ago

Hello peeps.

My sister in Law just phoned to scream down the phone that she's passed her test LOL so now we need to find her a car.

Against my advice, she did the automatic practical test which greatly limits what car we can buy her.

She's got around a £1000 budget and is young and single so not an MPV!

Thanks all.

Not gonna get anything of real quality for a bag of sand, older cars mean lots of repair bills etc,

i'd probably advise her to borrow her old's car for the time being and save up for something decent

We want something cheap anyway for a first runaround whilst she gets used to the roads, we can probs put a bit extra if need be

TBH if you're spending £1K there's a bit of pot luck in it.

www.autotrader.co.uk Got a great search engine. Look for something with 12 months MOT.

Bear in mind insurance will be mental first time around, go for something small like a Ka, Micra, Saxo, etc.

Might also be worth checking out www.parkers.co.uk for car info.

Thanks guys, so far I have found a couple of Micras, VW Polos, Vauxhall Corsa, and Renault Clio.
Maybe about 1998/1999 ome saying with 50,000 miles but not sure how to trust that

Will take the long MOT advice on board, too - thanks

i drive an auto

i have a P reg hyundai accent 1.3 coupe

its sound as a pound, cost me £800 2 years ago nearly with 50,000 miles on the clock

my brother in law is a mechanic and he has give it the once over and said for a cheap car its in really good nic

you can get good autos for that amount of money but just make sure you can take someone with you who knows what they are looking for in terms of wear and tear, engine etc etc

good luck

ps
brother in law said to me best go for an asian brand car ie japnanse (sp) chinese korean etc etc as they are better auto makers for older cars xxx

I just bought Mrs K an X reg Honda Logo Auto. 62000 miles and very good condition. Needed new brake pads and a door mirror to pass MOT. All in all owes me £1300 now, so it can be done. Go to a lot of the local dealers and ask about trade-ins they can sell to you "TRADE", so "NO WARRANTY GIVEN OR IMPLIED"

Get her to do Pass Plus course - that will bring insurance quote down quite substantially - tho you'll have to shop around the insurance companies for the best price :-)

Thanks she wants to but when I did mine I am not sure it was really worth it as the cheapest companies didn't ask about the Pass Plus, like Diamond and Elephant.

Did you do yours and find it useful?

Its a great course - I teach it lol - and even if the insurance company dont ask about it, make sure you tell them and request a discount as some of them wont offer it but will give the discount if you push for it.

On top of that its the experience you get in all aspects of driving - especially motorways - that really makes its value - who saw COW on BBC2 on Monday night ? I bet she hadnt done Pass Plus !
