Remember if you still have an old usable turntable lying around, you don't need one of these at all - you can just plug the amplifier output (not the lower powered turntable output!) into the line in on your sound card of your desktop ot laptop PC (cables with phono to 3.5mm jack are cheap and easy to get) & there is software out there for manipulating the recordings and cleaning them up eg.

Agreed. Bear in mind as well that most amps have the pre-amp built in (so you don't need to buy one), and that much better turntables are available used from ebay.

Also note the number of faulty ones on ebay -- never a good sign. Most of these are returned due to high levels of rumble / poor pitch control. This can be "repaired" with a rubber band -- the belts that come with these are often pitted so they rumble.

That said if you get a good one they do the job.

To be fair you should be voting on the deal and NOT the product.

You might not need a blow-up doll but for a quid it'll be a bargain to some.

Does anyone know of a good & cheap pre-amp.

Both my decks are pre built-in and relied on the pre amp being in the main amp, unlike the later offerings.

If the blow up doll was crap, deflating itself and not as good as the "manual" alternative, then I would be voting cold for that too, so yes, a very good analogy!

Lots being sold on ebay for about £15 -- look up RIAA. These are a Chinese clone of the QED Discsaver which was a very good budget pre-amp (originally retailing at £40).

Of course you may be able to find an original Discsaver on ebay for a similar amount.

If you're good with a soldering iron and have an old op-amp lying around schematics to build your own are around on the 'net. Should be as good as anything under £50 and you could put one together for well under a tenner.

This is much the same basic design as the QED and the ebay ones.

I built one of these years ago, replaced the op-amp with a Burr-Brown OPA2227 and the result puts a lot of expensive pre-amps to shame.

I would imagine someone buying this hasnt got one obviously, dont buy anything in that case...just use the one of everything you already have

I'd rather have a second hand Merc; likewise I'd rather have a second-hand turntable.

Vinyl has the capability to sound better than CD, but that relies on having a good turntable. Sadly, this one isn't it.

Agreed. I have LP's worth more that this turntable.

I wouldnt even think of playing them on this.
