Sewing machine help

POSTED BY: loudini 2 weeks, 17 hours ago

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me or give me some advice on sewing machines. I can already sew by hand but was wanting to invest in a sewing machine so I can do tasks quicker. At the moment I've just been looking at mini-sewing machines as I'm a complete beginner and in time I will upgrade. Could anyone give me some advice, or maybe a link to a website to reviews of sewing machines. I have no idea what makes a 'good' sewing machine. I'm currently looking in the price range of up to £100, but ideally around £70.
Thanks for any help :)

I wouldnt buy a mini as they are pretty feeble imo. I tried a couple and the tesion etc was poor, and they were only suitable for the lightest fabrics.

Will you be sewing jeans etc? or light fabrics?

I'm not planning on sewing denim, just light fabrics to make some cushion covers. I've just bought Cath Kidston's book 'Sew!' and it requires a sewing machine to get a good effect.

£65.49 with delivery...or collect in store £60

I have never used any other than singer brother or toyota so couldnt comment on the other makes. Unless you are in a hurry you could look at a local machine shop? they would give more advice and also sell 2nd hand machines which are often better than the modern ones.

You could also try yur local freecycle? i have just borrowed one after gifting mine some time ago. If you can only borrow one for a while maybe you would get an idea what you need in a machine?

Ahhh didn't think of Tesco! I'm just wanting something simple to get me started on some embroidery. Thanks! I'm pretty sure I've got an e-mail from Tesco Direct with a voucher somewhere....

I'm in no hurry to get one, was just researching into them so I can be informed when I come to purchase one. Will try and speak to someone in a shop who will have a good idea. I tried gumtree but to no avail :( will also have a look on freecycle!

If you are just doing cushions and straight lines, go for the Manual Dial "Brother" brand sewing machines (not those fancy digital ones) . Argos sells a few sewing machines. Never go for those mini crappy machines!!! .............. They are so rubbish you might as well do it by hand!!!.............

i would be careful about buying one or getting one second hand unless has some kind of warranty, they can be a nightmare to fix for the novice, i agree with earlier comment about mini, better of spending that money on more robust machine. happy hunting, watch those fingers

So general consensus is that I should just invest a bit more money and not get a mini? I was debating that, but was a bit put off at their complexity. Thanks for the advice everyone, think I'll spend the extra bit of cash and get a better machine.

lol is it one of those that are attached to a table? My nan had a similar one but got rid of it as it was pretty big and not enough room for it.

i had one of these as a kid an old lady gave my mum...it was handle operated

My brother if he was a good mood turned the handle for me. It made loads of stuff and was indestructable. The best 'toy' i had how sad am i?
