Obsessed with Exercise?

POSTED BY: PraxxtorCruel 2 weeks, 5 days ago

I started going to gym at the age of 14 to do weights, I did it for around 6 months, then we moved so I stopped going. I didn't do anything from around the age of 15-17. One day I decided to go jogging, I am now 19 and have been jogging for a minimum of 5 days a week, 45 minutes a day for about 2 years. The problem now is, if I don't keep this up and take more than 1 day break from jogging, I get really sick and uncomfortable, my body feels jellish, I feel bloated, low confidence etc.

Why is that? Has my mind/body become obsessed with exercise? Do any of you have the same problem or had?

Its cold turkey when you rest. Your body has got used to the endorphins produced by jogging and requires a fix.

Haha, you could say that, but it's the worst feeling when you didn't go the day before to jogging, you feel like utter crap. Trust me.

sounds like you're feeling guilty from not exercising and having physical symptoms for it.

Could be your body is "jonesin" the endophins released when you exercise.

If you're worried go along to your GP for a general check up x

Seriously you can overdo exercising just as you can anything else.

Give yourself permission to NOT exercise at times....especially if you're feeling ill/under the weather.

It shouldn't be causing you psychosomatic issues ( physical distress from feeling guilt for instance ).

BTW, you definitely aren't alone in feeling like this, many studies have been done on this issue for example, Jonathan Mond, senior research officer in the department of psychological medicine at Canberra Hospital in Australia, conducted a study on exercise guilt on 230 women ages 18-45. His main concern was its relationship to eating disorders but he found it common for his subjects to feel guilt ( over 70% ) when they didn't exercise.

So eat healthily. Exercise maybe 3 times a week in a cardiovascular way ( make your heart beat faster ) and allow yourself relaxation "fun" time too, no guilt in it x

Wow, thanks very much, I tell you one very positive thing I got from jogging. I haven't been sick in 2 years, before that I used to always have flu's as I have asthma. I recommend it to any and everyone.

I suffer the same. When you exercise your body produces the happy stuff (endorphines) these have the same effect mentally and physically as opiates (drugs).
your body then gets to reley on it. So if you take time off you get moody, guilts about missing the workout, physical symptons such as feeling ill or sick. higher agression, aches ect. Youll know what you get.
you need to take a rest altogether for a while. Sometimes a week or 10 days is enough for me to get perspective back on training. However I know people who've had to do 6 weeks.

Its a fine line. Too long and you might not go back, not enough and you'll stay as you are in the addicted state.
Do a week off and see how you feel afterwards. Good Luck and don't worry.

I am totally addicted - if i dont go for a long run daily I am a very unhappy bunny, in fact, i have run every day for the last year and a half, and by long run I mean > 1.5 hours (usually more than two).... i need help, but i'm useless at helping myself in that way

in short, i would take action now as if you dont you might get 'worse' and less and less sensible about it.

Exercise has some interesting effects upon the brain. The brain makes more of important chemicals – serotonin ( the brain’s own anti-depressant), dopamine ( the happiness chemical) and norepinephrine, which helps nerves to communicate better. This makes you fell happier when you are exercising.
After about 30 minutes of exercise your brain starts to make endorphins which are pain blockers, as exercise can hurt!!, so the discomfort goes and they make you feel happy as well ( no-one knows why – possibly because they allow the pleasure associated with serotonin and dopamine to be experienced more).
These are normal effects of exercise and not to be mistaken for a sort of addiction. It is normal to miss anything really that is part of a regular schedule, especially if it is a pleasureable experience. Think about missing lunch!

It is very important that if you feel you have an addiction that you seek appropriate help. Go to your GP in the first place.
If you are worried about addiction have a look at these ( or get googling), which are links to a range of sites that describe exercise addiction and some causes :
http://www.brainphysics.com/exercise-addiction.php
http://www.eatingproblems.org/epsexer.html
http://www.active.com/running/Articl..._addiction.htm
http://www.beatingaddictions.co.uk/B...nExercise.html

Good to see that you manage your situation, wincey.
