Digital Set Top Box

POSTED BY: grdnblak 1 week, 6 days ago

Our old STB has gone on the blink (about 3-4 year old) so we're looking to upgrade our 'tech' a wee bit.

We're looking at a STB that can play/pause/record live tv (looking at freeview+) and have built-in dvd recorder, more importantly it has to have two digital tuners so we can watch one digi channel and record another at the same time.

I've found one that I think will do the job -

http://www.dabs.com/products/sharp-500gb-twin-tuner-digital-rec-62LR.html

but the thing is we don't know whats hot or not these days or whats a good price for such a thing so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers in advance, Gordon

The best freeview+ recorder on the market, is without a doubt the Humax PVR-9300T!

many of them say watch one channel and record another, but i've found that this can mean watch analogue while recording digital or vise versa, will the humax def watch one digital channel and record another simultaneously?

Also it don't do dvd's.....

Yes you can watch one and record one or record two at once. You can even record two and watch one as long as it's one of the channels on one of the multiplex's you are recording.

The models out now are the PVR-9150T which has 160gb hard disk for about 80 hours recording and connects to your tv via scart. Or the PVR-9300T which has a 320gb hard disk (they do a 500gb version too) the main difference is it upscale's the picture over HDMI.
The older PVR9200T is also freeview+ complaint.

You may want to look at the 'Humax manager specials' on the humax site for some good prices. They are classed as 'grade A' But the 3 boxes I have had off them were as new with everything sealed new remote, batteries and paperwork. You get 12 months warranty.

The humax can record 2 programes at same time, while you watch a channel, or a 3rd you've already taped, all on digital, it doesn't have a dvd recorder, but to be honest, you don't really need it to!

You wouldn't be dissapointed with one, if you got it, changes the way you watch tv forever, has picture in picture, pause, rewind, advert skip, 320GIG is more then enough space to store stuff etc.
