Advice Please - TV Broken, 11 Months Old, Purchased from Currys.

POSTED BY: RickT 2 weeks, 5 days ago

Hi All,

Purchased a 37 inch LCD TV from Currys on the 15th November 2008.

Over the last few weeks the picture has been flickeing, on both scart lead sockets, with SKY or DVD player.

The screen gets a white bar running from top to bottom and the picture skips left to right.

As the TV is coming upto 12 months old i want to take it back to Currys and get it sorted before its out of warrenty.

Couple of questions...

What are my rights in regards to a full refund, repair or replacement.

I have the full reciept proofing purchase.

I went into the store the other day and explained the issue, they said bring it in and they will send it off for repair... normally take a few weeks at least... maybe upto a month or so...

I don't mid them mending it if they can but i dont want to be without a TV for upto a month! , in an ideal world i would like a full refund or replacement of same brand which is same spec or better.

Any advice I can take with me so I dont get walked over!

Cheers

Rick

You are within your rights to request a refund or a replacement instead of a repair.

I have been reading online about this to arm myself up for when i go in, but can not find anything in writing stating I would be entitled to a refund or replacement.

A couple of forums state Currys will refer me to LG direct to get the fault fixed rather than via them or via their own repair service.

Do you have any links to any documention I can print to help me case when im in there.... (I dont want some guy just reading their policy to me,)

Cheers

you have to give them chance to repair it

ask for a loan tv - say you have 14 kids etc

give them 2 weeks - max

dont lose your cool
speak nicely to them - if you have partner - let her do the talking - always better from a laydee -as the guys think were stupid

even if it was over a year - you would still be entitled to repair =

Don't go for the repair. If an item is faulty/not fit for purpose then go for the refund or replacement.

Yeah, your are within your rights to request a refund or a replacement, but I'm pretty sure they can offer to try to repair it first.

in my experience, DSGi are actually pretty good - and will probably replace or refund. But make sure its within the 12 months!

Im going to head down to the store in the morning with the TV, (im going to take some video footage of the problem as it does seem to be random.)

I will try and aim for a refund or a replacement, wish me look,

Painkiller - thanks for the link

good idea re: taking it in. Always bad for a store to have customers returning items, so would expect them to sort the refund and rapidly hide the dead set asap!

Thats what i thought, if i am their with a 37 inch TV by my side, they may help more rather than telling me to call their service team.

Cheers

Good luck... Have you searched google to check that this isn't a known issue for that type of TV before requesting an identical one?

waste of time taking it into the store

they WILL tell you that all TVs above 32" are serviced via an engineer callout.

you'll need to ring the helpline and do an over the phone checklist, they'll arrange to send an engineer out and collect it from you.

they will not loan you a TV unless you have Whatever Happens Premier club, tho the store manager MAY decide to loan you one, but thats his/her discrection after your TV has been collected.

they have 28 days from the time of collection to have your TV repaired/returned or replaced with vouchers.

if you say its an inherant fault with the tv and want to claim its not fit for purpose rather than just a breakdown, they will want to assess it first and may even ask you for an independant engineer report stating this problem is well documented.

taking the TV to the store will only get you turned around and told to go back home and ring the service line.
theres no tv repairs over 26" done instore.
they may hook up the TV and see the fault, but they will not be able to do anything further apart from offer to book in the TV for repair from the store.
which is only really helpful if you cant take the day off when the Tech Guys come to collect it.

DSGi have a 'reasonable amount of time' to repair or replace your TV, its generally accepted as 28 days.

Sorry to bring you down to earth with a bump but you're not going to get a replacement without them seeing it to judge if its more economical to repair it first.
if they issue a replacement it'll be in the form of vouchers rather than cash refund.

have worked for Currys now for 18 months and this is standard under the years warranty.

under Whatever Happens Premier its a next day callout at a time slot of your choosing, loan TV while yours is away, 10 day Max turnaround or replacement issued.
