It looks like the battery is not strong enough to hold the charge and keep the laptop running. is my guess

but it will run for an hour on so on battery only.....
don't understand how the charger can charge it when off, but not when it's running??

I'd guess it'd be your charger as they would still normally boot with just the charger plugged in.

Perhaps it's not kicking enough voltage out, Although enough to charge the battery, Perhaps very slowly too I'd imagine.

Also usually cheaper to replace the charger than the battery.

I would say the recharge circuit on the battery is gone.

And if I remember correctly, the zd series is the big 17" monster thing, with P4 chips, so it will consume some power!!

I had a voltmeter to the charger output & it is giving 19v (as per spec, I believe).

agree the charger is the cheaper option

that's right, the fan goes all the time it's on

but why won't it boot from charger only without a battery in?

could both be bust?

I cant remember cos it was a good 3 years ago, but I think the charging circuit needs to be hooked up because of the power it uses. The block on the adaptor is huge so it does need to give off some watts. We needed to keep the battery in when displaying because it wouldnt power on.

Im 90% its the battery, the other ten percent could be the recharge circuit in the laptop itself.

re the laptop recharge cct, it must work (or at least sort of work!) cos it will charge the battery when the laptop is switched off

Buy both and send one back!

It's not as simple as that, your multimeter does not act as a load, that's (possibly) not the voltage that the transformer is providing under load.

but which is faulty? the charger? the battery? the laptop charging circuitry?

there's only one way to find out..............fight

seriously - I don't want to chuck money away on an item I don't need, it just doesn't seem clear cut what's faulty.....

I would be siding on a battery or charging circuit, more on the charging circuit to be honest, unless the battery provides the charging circuitry which might explain why it doesnt work when the battery is not in.

If you order a battery online, and it does not sort the issue, you can send it back under the distance selling regs, give that a try.
