PS3 supported video formats

right I want to play a movie from my USB on the PS3, but it says unsupported format. its a .avi.... i've played those kind of files before! why won't it work this time? how can i make it work?

I beleive theres loads of different types of .avi files..

In my dvd player sometimes .avis work sometimes no sound or other issues

.avi is a container. You should analyse it on your computer to see what codecs it needs.

I get this sometimes with my little ones movie collection, as deathtrap says its the container and also can be the audio compression aswell. TBH you can reencode the whole movie to a different format (still avi but say xvid with CBR 256kbps sound in Vdub) but tbh with mine i just ditched them as it was around 4 files out of 200
