calling all skiers

POSTED BY: droitwichgal 1 week, 6 days ago

Hi all...

We are looking at going skiing this Xmas, hopefully travelling 26th or 27th December for a week.

Now, we have never done this before and have no idea who to book with to get the best deals, or where to go (although have been told Bulgaria is a good start).

We are both in our early 30s and are not big drinkers, so bars in the area are not a priority, although a few shops to look around etc would be a bonus...

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Droit :)

Ive been with Neilson before on my first ski trip and i have to say they were brilliant.
The quality of the chalets that Neilson run was excellent and the food was just amazing!

Just makesure you take into account when you book you will need to include Lift passes, Ski Hire and Lessons (highly reccomended as im assuming you havent skied before)

Ususally with lessons in my experience you will do 3 hours of lessons a day from 9-12 then do as you wish for the rest of the day. which is great as it really helps plus you will meet other people the same level as you and can go skiing in your free time with them if you so wished. they can act as a bit of a confidence booster if there is a group of you who are new and out on your own rather than just 2 of you

If you are planning to go at Xmas there are several things to consider: you need to pick somewhere reasonably high as there's no guarantee of decent natural snow (as opposed to 'manmade') at that time of year lower down and as seasoned skiers know that too, places in these resorts sell out quicker - you don't want to be spending too long travelling to the snow from lower down the mountain. Prices are usually considerably higher than outside the Xmas/New Year period and resorts are much busier, as are ski classes. When I lived in Switzerland I never touched the slopes till the beginning of January as the queues were always a nightmare over that period, not so bad these days however. If you're looking for value as it's your first time, Andorra is worth considering. I've heard good reports about Bulgaria too. I can certainly offer you more specific advice if you need.
