Some dodgy looking ads on Auto trader

They have been on there for years now, you can reserve the bargain car by sending them a deposit of a few grand. They sometimes will even deliver it once they have received the deposit......

You mean this is a scam? Why would anyone pay a deposit for for home delivery?

If its a scam I wonder why they are not being reported to Auto trader? Should autotrader be bothered as long as insertion fee is paid. I don't think they have any liability for genuineness of the ads on their website.

I work for the Autotrader and yes you're right that people do gave to pay for Ads, however not all of them are genuine & it's near impossible for us to police the site to stop these scammers. That being said you can call up Autotrader & report any dodgy looking ads & if they are, they will be deleted.

Normal rule of thumb mate, of it sounds too good to be true, IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!

Yes my friend it is a scam and they must be making money cos it never stops...
Isn't it strange though, just as with Ebay, you can look through and easily spot the scams but they still leave them for the punters to report them.

I am definitely staying away. I am just trying to understand the modus operandi of the scammers. I dont think anyone would pay a deposit / advance without actually looking at the car. If the car is a stolen one and they are advertising it for sale, I must say they have GUTS considering the police might be on the lookout.

They depend on the punter buying into the really good bargain they are offering, they will give you a line about the car being transported to their address to cover the fact you will not be able to see it straight away. They will tell you that they have loads of interest in such a cheap car but they will reserve it for the first person to place a deposit, you may even get the option to get it back if you are not happy with the car.... All kinds of rubbish to guide the gullible around to parting with a few grand...
