Sharp BD-HP21H Blu-ray Player £79.99 @ the range. Ex Empire Direct stock.

I'm taking a punt on posting this but hope to cover everything here. This player is spec 1.1 and therefore will not be of any use to those who want to use the downloadable content of spec 2.0 via ethernet. However, if like me you really don't care for all the bells and whistles nonsense that has plagued home video formats since the introduction of DVD then this could be for you. Updatable via disc ( anyone with a PC built in the last decade should have the eqipment to be able to update this player ). If you don't think yourself capable then I bet you know someone who is. Get the geek who lives next door to do it for you and everyone's happy. Some people say it's an ugly player but it looks o.k. to me. Some say it take a while to load. Use that time to get some popcorn ready :)

So to summise. If you have a HD t.v and no HD source and you want to watch or rent Blu ray discs and don't want all the interactive rubbish that comes with it and prefer a branded product over a Curtis product then this is for you.

Like what? I bought one of these on clearance at Makro the other month for £57, have not had any problems with latest firmware at all.

Nice to see you back up this statement that profile 1.1 will not play new films, wheres the source of this info please?

Nope, but according to this link, it tends to have more problems with Profile 2.0 players with insufficient memory than with Profile 1.1 players

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/blog...+blame+25+09+0

I am amazed to be honest then if some titles are meant to be incompatible with certain players how on earth Blu Ray has won the war of the HD format, its ridiculous! Glad currently I have more HD DVD than Blu Ray titles, will be curiously adding more Blu Ray to my rental queue though, but what faith has a consumer in buying a film to find its incompatible with their player.

And yet there are so many people on here saying Blu Ray is better, HD DVD is dead...well it lost the format war, but it at least was properly finalised as a format and was robust!!!

The thing to remember is that HDDVD always had this type of content right from the start. Because Blu Ray won the "war" they had to implement it since how can an "inferior" format have something extra? The implementaion was a direct result of the war imho and was something that they should have had ready from the start.

I'm still not interested in all the additional content nonsense. I want to watch a good film in high def and that is all. ( owns HDDVD )

There are alot that have problems on rented films, and some of the new films, see the word I said some.

Don't need a source of bloody info some will not play I did not get the info off the net I have seen it at first hand and someone in the family had a 1.1 profile player until they upgraded to 2.0

Same here, I bought this Sharp player mainly because it was a fantastic price I got it for (and cannot be bothered with profile 2.0 hooking it up to ethernet. My good old Toshiba EP30 gets far more use I can tell you!

Saying that though, if HD DVD had not of lost the war I would not have invested in it and the subsequent amount of films I now own, but owning both, clearly the Java hungry bloated interface of Blu Ray seems to be its achilles heel.

Right, so you are basically assuming on someone in the family on their particular player, not even knowing if they kept up to date with the firmwares released for their particular model player.

"Seems" like all players have their problems, Profile 1.1 or Profile 2.0, but to make a broad assumption about Profile 1.1 compatibility issues with new titles is somewhat odd And whats the difference between "rented" and "bought" films that would cause the issue!!!!

Of course you have assumed, you have no proof to give that "some" rental discs and new titles are incompatible with Profile 1.1, as you have not stated any that have, and certainly a google search I have done I have not found any problems other than with Samsung BD-P1200 player which they had a lawsuit over incompatiblity issues.

You have made a broad sweeping statement about Profile 1.1 players being incompatible with "some" "rented" and "new" titles, and yet failed to give any info to any potential purchasers here why they should then avoid Profile 1.1 players...in other words thats scaremongering people from buying players that are Profile 1.1 without any good cause or proof if you had stated some FACTS fair enough, but you mentioned the same cack on the last Sharp thread...so I would like once again what facts other than your word of mouth!!! And you said " A LOT of rented and new films won't play on Profile 1.1" if thats not an assumption what is?
