To be honest when Amazon say 4-6 weeks I would treat that with suspicion!

A couple of interesting comments on the WDC support forums here http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....nJvciBteWJvb2s

precis -

Just a few points...

Remote file transfers to and from a WD My Book World Edition hard drive are limited to files under 1 GB through WD Anywhere Access. You will not be able to transfer a file larger than 1 GB to the WD My Book World Edition hard drive from a remote computer using WD Anywhere Access.

When connecting and accessing a USB hard drive formatted as FAT32 connected to the WD My Book World Edition hard drive, WD Anywhere Access will translate all files to a Hidden attribute. To resolve this issue, you can view the properties of the files or folders and un-select the Hidden attribute.

External USB hard drives that are formatted as NTFS connected to the WD My Book World Edition hard drive are read only.

WD Anywhere Access will not open a share with more than 1000 files or folders on a WD My Book World Edition hard drive as detailed in Answer ID 1517.

Hidden or Read Only file attributes are not preserved when transferring files from a computer system to the WD My Book World Edition hard drive through WD Anywhere Access.

Files created or copied to the WD My Book World Edition hard drive through WD Anywhere Access are only visible on the local computer system if WD Anywhere Access is running and the user is signed in.

Though it appears you don't have to load the supplied software to achieve the functionality.

I'll add one also for Tenex:

WD Anywhere Access is not compatible with Macintosh computers.

Thats the software that gets criticised on the WD forum if it can be set up without using it then I'll be happy.

I can't see why it couldn't be used without software. According to their User Guide, this drive supports CIFS. So in theory, you should be able to access files from non-Windows devices, such as Linux PCs, Xbox, PS2 and network players that support such feature. If Mac support CIFS/SMB then it could access it too.
The only problem is that Amazon got no stock (their '4 to 6 weeks' basically mean 'no stock and we got no clue when it'll be available'). And it is not just Amazon, but anybody else too.

It's not even available from Western Digital's WD Store either... If you check any other product in the range, it will show you a price and the possibility to add it to your shopping cart. Not for this one...

Shame really, I was looking for a networked HDD that could also handle an additional USB drive as I've already got one. This one did fit my bill...

I think Asus is making one of these but apart from them you'll be struggling to find anything else.

If you plugged this straight into the gigabit ethernet on a computer, would it simply act as a normal external HD, but with the increased speed of gigabit ethernet over USB2 or FW400?

Cheers.

If you used a crossover network cable or connected via a gigabit switch, i'm sure you'd get gigabit speed between PC and NAS.

this looks a nice piece of gear.
