Dual HDD Networked Attached Storage (SATA) £70.21

£70.21

188°

FOUND BY: PNE 2 years, 11 months ago

As an alternative to the many external USB drives that are on offer this seems to represent good value to me for £70.21 delivered (Hotukdeals member price). Adding your own drive(s, means you get to use the brand of drive that you prefer(trust.

This Dual HDD NAS enclosure allows you to turn SATA hard drives, old or new, into an external NAS drive, making data even easier to share on a network.

Just as a router allows you to share a single Internet connection without the need for any particular computer to be turned on, a NAS (Network Attached Storage) hard drive allows you to share a drive full of data without needing any particular computer to be turned on.

Supports RAID and JBOD functions so you can even install 2 drives to expand data capacity up to 1 Terabyte (TB).

Features:
- Supports RAID and JBOD functions so you can even install 2 drives to expand data capacity up to 1 Terabyte (TB) (500GB x2).
- Provides an instant share of photos, videos, music and data over your network.
- Easy configuration using the web based management application - no software installation required.
- Built-in SAMBA server for cross-platform transfer among different operating systems.
- Built-in FTP server to provide Internet data transfer between external users.
- Built-in USB printer server - just connect your printer to the enclosure's USB port to enable printer sharing without occupying any PC's resources.
- Easy installation and low support cost, suitable for home or office networks.
- Aluminium housing with large fan design to prevent overheating

Specifications:
- Interface: RJ45 (LAN), USB1.1 (for print server)
- Data Transfer Rate: Up to 8MB/s (networking)
- Partition configuration: FAT32/ EXT2 EXT3
- RAID support: RAID 1 / RAID 0

Supported Protocol:
- TCP/IP, NBNS (Net BIOS Name Server), Microsoft Networks (CIFS/SMB), DHCP Server/Client (Auto detection), SNTP Client

- Weight: 700g (excluding hard drive)
- Dimensions: 120 x 180 x 80mm

Minimum System Requirements:
- Apple Safari, Linus Mozilla, IE 5.x, Netscape 6.2 up,
- Win 98SE / ME / 2000 / 2003 / XP / Vista
- Mac OS X

What's In The Box?
- Dual HSS NAS (no hard drives included)
- Securing screws
- Ethernet Cable
- Power Adapter
- Driver CD (with user manual)

Sounds good. I emailed SVP to find out more about the device.

This seems to be a pretty damn good deal seeing as the unit supports RAID and is a printer server too! Printer servers by themselves can cost almost as much as this does.

note if you format in fat32 the largest size of a single file is 4gb. Would be a limitation if u intend to store larger single files in this way.

This seems to be common on NAS boxes though.

It does also support EXT2 and 3 though.

Given the ever decreasing cost of hard drives and compared to similar offerings from D-Link this has got to be a better investment than buying a single external USB drive. 1TB of online storage for £200ish...yes please.

Shame its only 10/100 and no gigabit LAN.

Do you know the specs of the box, ie: CPU/RAM etc onboard?

Can the USB port be used to add an external drive or is it printers only?

Does it have any fans at all?

Nice deal, the PDF on the site is a bit amateurish but fine.

Would like to know the full specs, am looking at the £220 QNAP NAS server but if this is as good (apart from the LAN speed and USB) then I will save some cash and get this )

I wouldn't worry about the lack of gigabit LAN too much, or the CPU etc. Just consider the capabilites of the device, can it do the jobs that you have in mind? I use a NSLU2 with 2*250GB disks connected to a 54G wireless ethernet bridge to stream DIVX and MP3 around my house. It only has 32Mb of Ram and a CPU that is probably little better than an old Spectrum ZX81 but it works very well indeed.

Yeah I know, but transferring 100's of GBs of data onto the drive will be ridiculously slow on 100Mbps compared to 1Gbps, and if I cant use my USB HD to transfer data then you are left with just the LAN to transfer data.

Its only for home use so I'm not worried about the max number of connections etc, but it needs to be fast enough for streaming to a few users simultaneously, so knowing the chipset etc onboard would be useful (or a model number so I can Google it).

Also wondering if 2x500GB drives is its max, as I would prefer to get 2x750GB drives, 1 now and one again in the future.

Still a very good deal and voted hot, just I can see a few points where it might dissapoint some people (such as me )

Do you get more that 100Mb/sec write speeds on your sata disks?

I just read the manual on their site. It seems that the device is based on StorLink Centroid NAS reference design. Here is a bit more info.

In this case, USB is 1.1 only, which clearly isn't intended for external USB HDD. It also seem to have fan (at least they mention it in FAQ section of UG). SVP states that 500GBx2 is maximum capacity.

Slug's CPU is not that sluggish you know 266MHz (de-underclocked) is clearly more than enough for what it is. I wish they'd through in more RAM though.
