2GB DDR2 800 PC6400 for £88.05 (P&P inclusive) or less with 3% quidco

Glad to see DDR2 kits have come down in price. It doesn't seem that long ago when 1GB would costs you about £200. PC6400 seems about the standard for DDR2 now with good timings, higher modules tend to have much greater latency.

Also Geil are good, used them before and are good for Overclocking. Though their customer service is truly shocking and non-existant.

Yep good price. Expect all DDR2 memory to drop a great deal in the next few months, as the launch of DDR3 is meant to be this summer I think.

a quick question these ddr2 memory timings say cas5 i remember being told to buy cas2 memory as it was quicker does this still hold true ???

yes ijwia. Most ddr2 is cas4, you can however get cas3 too. cas5 obviously aint the best, but it will still run nicely.

DDR3 is already out, Corsair have modules ready though I think only one board at the moment supports it and the board is £200. I wouldn't buy DDR3 for a long while; longer module size than DDR2, costs more to manufacture and they have huge latency timings compared to the early stages of DDR2.

Is 5-5-5-15 better than 4-4-4-15?

The lower, the better.

Higher speed memory has higher latency so you wont find any DDR2 sticks with as low as CAS2. Standard PC6400 memory has CAS5 timings, with the higher performance sticks having CAS4. CAS4 memory is better for overclocking (you may need to run it with CAS5 timings though at speeds greater than 800mhz).

Right so I assume 4-4-4-12 is faster than 4-4-4-15?

I've seen a CAS4 OCZ memory module but its about £30 more than the Geil. I heard OCZ memory is supposed to very good thou, not heard much about Geil to be honest. What do you reckon?

Well unless you plan to overclock your memory and processor you will not really see too much difference with these 2 modules at default settings so I would go for the cheaper option. The Geil Ultra should overclock quite nicely and I would say it is a steal at that price.

So if you are NOT going to overclock and just want to run the modules at the rated timings go for the Geil Value they will run very nicely indeed.
If you PLAN to overclock go for the Geil Ultra as they should overclock very nicely and will run marginally faster than the Value at the rated timings.

Both are Bargainlicious as a couple of months ago you could expect to pay at least £60 more for the same modules!!

Anyone able to confirm if this memory will be compatible with a Sony VAIO VGX XL-1201 (standard supplied RAM is PC5300) and a Dell Dimension 9200 (standard supplied memory is PC4200). The .pdf manual states it accepts PC4200/PC5300/PC6400 RAM, though not sure if it will run at a lower speed to 800MHz or not as often with Dell you can't adjust things like timings etc via the BIOS?
