Cheap upgrade route for old Sky+ box owners

£99.00

-99°

FOUND BY: lazygamer 2 years, 4 months ago

Just got a letter from Sky:

"Thanks for being one of the first.

"Sky HD is normally £299 (plus £10 a month HD subscription), but as a litle thank you for being with Sky, we'd like to offer it to you for £199 (plus £10 a month HD subscription) with free delivery and self-installation.

"Sky Anytime on TV uses our latest technology. So while its available on Sky HD and on our newer Sky+ boxes, it's unfortunately not available on your current Sky+ box. If you'd prefer not to upgrade to Sky HD, you could also choose a new Sky+ box for £99, with free delivery and self-installation.

"Please give us a call on 0870 600 1530."

If like me you have one of the older 40Gb Sky Plus boxes, these boxes cannot get Sky Anytime. The offer is especially good for the Sky HD deal, as it is normally £299 for existing customers, the Sky+ deal less so as it only saves you £30 installation.

The deal is ONLY valid for old Sky+ box owners, as A) Sky know what box you have and B) you'll already have the correct dish and cabling setup to use a new Sky+ or Sky HD box.

Capacity Specs (for comparison):
Old Sky+: 40Gb (~40Gb usable for recordings)
New Sky+: 160Gb (~80Gb usable for recordings, ~70Gb for Sky Anytime)
Sky HD: 320Gb (~160Gb usable for recordings, ~140Gb for Sky Anytime)

So if you currently have an old Sky+ box and keep running out of space, or your box (like mine) is about to bite the dust, this upgrade route might be useful :)

This is not really a great deal, there are other threads on the site that can get you a better deal.

I have just upgraded from ordinary sky to sky+ and am not paying anything. Free box, free installation.

Other people managed to get a similar deal with reduced costs for their sky package or movies for £1 a month

I had a similar letter a month or so ago, but it was £79 for a new sky plus or £149 for HD and that was with installation on both

Sky HD boxes are about £150-£160 on fleabay. So you can "self install" one of them for cheaper. The new Sky+ boxes are certainly not worth £99 either.

If you phone up Sky and threaten to cancel saying your current box is on it's way out, they will eventually offer you a new (poss reconditioned) sky + box with installation free, worked for me

I would like another Sky+ box for upstairs just trying to figure out the cheapest way to get this as TBH I don't want to pay for the box or installation

I would rather have a old SKY+ that way you can throw in a 250gb HD and use it totally for what you want unless you want the anytime feature (can this be disabled?)

I have also had this letter saying I cant get sky anytime, telling me I need to upgrade, even though I have a fairly new Sky + 160 box from Sky!

Unfortunately mine is version 4E20, and it looks like mine wont work with sky anytime for some unknown reason! another rip off from sky!, and they`ve just put prices up by another £1.50 a month as well

.
Sky Anytime on TV is available now to customers with a Sky HD box and to most customers with the latest Sky+ box. It will be rolled out to the remaining customers with the latest Sky+ box over the coming weeks.
The most recent Sky+ boxes have a larger hard drive in them which means they can support the latest services that we have to offer, such as Sky Anytime on TV. You can check to see if you have a recent Sky+ box by doing the following:
    • Press the Services button on your remote control
    • Press 4 - System Setup
    • Then press 5 - System Details.
The first 4 digits in the Version Number field will tell you what type of Sky+ box you have and you'll then be able to determine if you can receive Sky Anytime on TV. Boxes with version codes 4F21, 9F22, 4E21 and 4E30 will be able to receive this service over the coming weeks. Unfortunately those with codes 4F20, 9F23, 9F21, 9F20 & 4E20 will not.

I'm assuming that the sky+ I get on wednesday will be able to get sky anytime? Would be annoying if they didnt and then told me to upgrade!

Oh well, will still be a better service than we have now so I wouldnt complain

Just about to cancel the movie package as you no longer have to pay the Sky+ charge from today.

Mine is a older + box that I have modded to 160gb but I have not had any letters from Sky for ages until a couple of days ago when the Sky Mag turned up to say the prices are going up :(
Surpose that will be the last time I see that mag till next year.

sorry everyone - I looked everywhere on the site for something similar. obvisously wasn't looking hard enough.

also I've never had much luck with sky boxes off eBay, I helped a neighbour get a sky+ box off the site, and lo and behold they sent it sans a hard drive (no mention in the listing).

the movies for £1 a month was offered to nearly every single sky customer so that's a non-issue. (we've got it £1 a month for a year, not 3 months like that promotion promised, and we've not been paying for multiroom since the end of 2005 anyway). £38 a month for the full package on 2 boxes (1 sky+) is pretty good anyway.

All in all I didn't do my research. Oh dear how sad never mind.

I'll be getting a Sky HD, but not until I get a HDTV in the living room first.
