It looks nice
It can give you a longer reach, so possibly a more comfortable riding position.
Expensive/light components all built together, will have you laughing at the top of a hill, while the people with their £60 bikes walk up to meet you

Why do bike snobs assume that people who buy cheap MTB intend to ride them up and down small mountains? Same reason I won't use my Subaru to cross the Sahara or my Salomons to freestyle in the snow park - we're not idiots.

See, cheap £60 bikes are the LADA's of the bike world.

And i'm in Scotland, and i've seen lots of idiots trying to get up hills with them and 99% of the time they do walk it.
It is pretty much just all hills here of course.
Also seen plenty in bike shops wondering why their new bikes just amazingly fell to bits.

Here where i live, you dont stand a chance of actually cycling up an entire hill, without spending £150-200 on a bike.

So nothing to do with Scotland being known as the 'Sick man of Europe'.

And a Lada Niva would probably cross the Sahara and climb a Scottish mountain better than that landie on TG.

I know what you mean. I would never take my Bugatti Veyron to the Nurburgring either...it would be madness.

Yea cos i must be so sick when i've been cycling a couple hundred miles a week.

And its not more exercise, as the folk with better bikes will cycle further and easily make it up.

err... so what did people do when a 150-200 pound bike was as heavy and the same spec as what is now a 60 pound bike? its not the bike that matters its the cyclist !

The fact is, most the £60 bikes are those full-suspension solid steel things that are in fashion but of no relevant use.
Due to the extra weight involved in all the extra steel for the dual-sus frames etc, even the old bikes wouldnt have been as heavy as these things.

Older bikes were, no suspension and medium thickness steel tubing.
New bikes, heavy suspension kits and thick steel tubing.

And all the gimmicks, suspension and disc brakes etc, that they add on new bikes now, take away money from the rest of the components, degrading the quality of the whole bike.
The older bikes would most likely still be able to go up hills (after a half hour clean up), better than a brand new cheapo thing.

In fact my sisters steel Specialized Hardrock would guaranteed be lighter, and that was about the £200 price mark a good few years ago.
Stand it beside a brand spanking new £60 cheapo, and the old Hardrock would rip it to shreds.

The £60 cast iron(weight) front suspension bike I got of ebay 8 years ago will go up, down, round anything I throw at it. I ride it 5 days a week over all kinds of terrain on my way to and from work and it has never let me down.
