1duck:
err... so what did people do when a 150-200 pound bike was as heavy and the same spec as what is now a 60 pound bike? its not the bike that matters its the cyclist !
The fact is, most the £60 bikes are those full-suspension solid steel things that are in fashion but of no relevant use.
Due to the extra weight involved in all the extra steel for the dual-sus frames etc, even the old bikes wouldnt have been as heavy as these things.
Older bikes were, no suspension and medium thickness steel tubing.
New bikes, heavy suspension kits and thick steel tubing.
And all the gimmicks, suspension and disc brakes etc, that they add on new bikes now, take away money from the rest of the components, degrading the quality of the whole bike.
The older bikes would most likely still be able to go up hills (after a half hour clean up), better than a brand new cheapo thing.
In fact my sisters steel Specialized Hardrock would guaranteed be lighter, and that was about the £200 price mark a good few years ago.
Stand it beside a brand spanking new £60 cheapo, and the old Hardrock would rip it to shreds.
